Cinda Annexes Betsy Ross Inaugural Speedy Shouse Miss Turns Back Recover Foul Claim of La tiers Rider Not Allowed at Garden State; 31,576 See Thrilling Duel By FRED GALIANI Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, Nā€ž J., May 17. ā€” Cinda added another stake to her already impressive record and 9,000 to owner Jouett Shouses bank book when she outgamed H. P. Headleys Recover in a thrilling and bitter stretch battle in the Betsy Ross Stakes here today and then withstood a foul claim. Only a head separated the pair at the finish, while it was four lengths back to G. F. Stricklands One Miss, while C. H. Wacker m.s Jubling, who got away last, was fourth. The race was replete with delays, Blue Case holding up the start when she threw Arnold Kirkland in the gate nad got herself lodged under it. Logan Batcheller, on Recover, claimed a foul against Charlie Burr on Cinda and there was a long period of waiting while the stewards viewed the film to judge the merits of the foul. Cinda covered the six furlongs in the first running of the Betsy Ross in 1:12 and returned .40 for her fifth win in six starts. The trophy was presented to G. Ray Bryson by Mrs. George E. Allen, wife of the advisor to President Truman and former head of the RFC. Shouse was not present to see his daughter of Occupy win, as he is in Europe. This was the second straight stake at the meeting for Cindar coming right on the heels of her Colonial Handicap score when she beat older rivals. Today she was. meeting her own age kind. Long Wait for Official The crowd of 31,576, the largest of the meeting to date, had to wait about 12 minutes before the result was declared official. If G. F. Stricklands Lord Priam stays out of New York he probably can win a lot of races. The three-year-old son of Priam n. was the easiest sort of winner in the six-furlong fifth race, taking the lead above the half-mile pole and then coasting away from D. Sheas Sweet Vermouth to win by four lengths. G. D. Wideners Tahitian was some distance back in third place and a slight margin before Grey Magic. Batcheller claimed interference at the head of the stretch when the two horses were fighting it out head and head, but1 tho stewards could find no cause for such an accusation. Although the Betsy Ross drew a bumper field of 15 horses, none of them figured seriously in the running after the first quarter mile. When Blue Case was finally put back in the gate the 15 misses surged away from the two gates with Cinda, coming on from the outside, soon rushing up to take on Recover for the lead, while Jubling got away absolutely last. Recover and Cinda fought it out head and head all the way down the backstretch, with Blue Rhymer close up until they hit the far turn, where she quit. Jubling worked her way up along the rail to draw closer into the pack. By the time they hit the bend Recover and Cinda had drawn five lengths away from the rest of the field and there wasnt much difference between them, a nodding head giving first one and then another the lead. As they came circling around for the straightaway home, Batcheller shook up Recover with a left hand whip tattoo, while Burr was content to hand ride. It was here that Batcheller alleged a foul, that was not discernible from the stands, nor as later proved, by the pictures. Cinda forged away a little from her rival at- the eighth pole arid appeared ready to draw out, but Batcheller went back to his bat and the Headley filly came on again. She yoked Cinda once again and Burr still confident in the power of his mount, kept hand-riding and within the last 50 yards or so had, the race won, despite the narrow margin. It was daylight back "to One Miss in the center of the pack, while Jubling was only a neck off the board. The latter had excuses in that after being away last, she moved fast into contention and then had the misfortune to run up horses heels. Cinda was the favorite with the large crowd and the announcement of her victory officially brought relief to many a horse player. Lord Priam rattled off his work in 1:13%, close to the_ fastest time of the meet and paid .40 as a heavy choice. He has been out six times this year, winning three of them, two at Laurel. He moved .up into the stake department in three races in New York but the best he could do was run sixth in the Swift Stakes. Bobby Permane was on Lord Priam in his journey this afternoon.
