J, MURPHY HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 29. The first of the important three-year-old races to be contested in Chicago this summer is down for decision tomorrow, Memorial Day, when the Peabody Memorial Handicap, 5,000 added, will be run. The race was originated in 1929 to honor the memory of Francis S. Peabody, grandfather of the present president-chairman of the Illinois Horse Racing Board, and when the latters father, Stuyvesant Peabody, Sr., passed away the name was changed out of reverence for both noted sportsmen who contributed so much to racing in Illinois. This will mark the twenty-fourth running of the affair, the distance of which is one and one-eighth miles. Stuyvesant Peabody, Jr., will present a trophy to the owner of the winning thoroughbred. A field of eight has been named to go to the post in the Peabody, with Sam E. Wilson Jr.s Gushing Oil, winner of the Louisiana and Arkansas Derbys, ,nd Allison and Prestridges Dark Count, a stakes winner in California last winter, being top-weighted with 123 pounds each. Others in the field, all to carry 121 pounds, are the Red Top Farms Red Charger, H. G. Bookmans Happy Go Lucky, Buddah Stables Dance Nsing, Reverie Knoll Farms Smoke Screen, Mrs. Sayde Smiths Our Beauty, and William W. Smiths Sandtop. Trio Ran in Kentucky Derby Gushing Oil, Happy Go Lucky, and Smoke Screen all tried for the Kentucky Derby and all were unplaced, while Gushing Oil went on to be a contestant in the Preakness. Following the running of the Maryland three-year-old classic, it was discovered that the Wilson colt had run in both big events while suffering from a stone bruise. The colt gave no indication of soreness until after his Preakness effort. The injured member has responded to treatment and is reported to be fit and ready. He looks as the likely favorite for the Peabody. Happy Go Lucky, while not a stakes winner as yet, has threatened on numerous occasions. As a two-year-old he was in the money-13 times in 19 starts and won four of his first five races this year. His only defeat early in the season was when he finished second to Gushing Oil in the Louisiana Derby. Happy Go Lucky also came close to being a casualty prior to the Continued on Page Three Eight in Classy Field For Peabody Memorial Gushing Oil Looms as Favorite Oyer Happy Go Lucky, Sandtop " Continued from Page One Kentucky Derby. He suffered a slight injury while being shod for the Blue Grass Stakes, but happily and luckily the ailment was quickly overcome. Smoke Screen, like Happy Go Lucky, was "often a groomsman but never a groom" during his two-year-old .career. Starting the 1951 Chicago season with promise when he finished second to Errards Guide in the Joliet Stakes, and, incidentally, defeating Happy Go Lucky in that event, Smoke Screen failed to visit the winners circle all year. He has fared better this season and has been successful three times, his most recent conquest being in the Peabody Prep last Saturday in which he finished in front of-Dance Nsing, Happy Go Lucky, and Dark Count;. Darlce Nsing is just about the most improved horse in this part of trie country. Purchased for ,000, the unsexed son of Seven Hearts has come along very well, indeed. Although Unplaced in a race at Sportsmans Park, he came back with a smashing performance in the Peabody Prep, in which it took Smoke Screen "life and death" to beat him by a head. Dark Count was a regular stakes contestant during the Santa Anita meeting and came through splendidly in the seven furlong San Luis Rey Stakes at that track. The event was fashioned for California foals. The son of Count Gallahad was unplaced in his only start here. Red Charger, who on one occasion last year finished in front of Hill Gail, qualified for the Peabody in winning the Sun Beau Purse here recently. In that event he defeated Our Beauty. The distance was six furlongs, and Red Chargers winning margin was three parts of a length. Our Beauty beat Jet Ace and other good ones at Oak-lawn Park and won ah earlier race at New Orleans, Fair Grounds, while Sandtop is a winner this year. Racing secretary Bogenschutz has arranged a good program to support the feature, with nine races in all. First post time Memorial Day will be 1:30 p. m., and the same starting time will prevail Saturday when the Narcissus Handicap will have it inaugural running.
