Eleven Crack Speedsters in Camden H. A. KIMBALL Sends out his speedy Algasir in the Camden Handicap at the Garden State Park course today. Arise, Dark Peter, Woodchuck Clash Trio Expected to Attract Most Support in 0,000 Garden State Holiday Race By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent x GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 29. Addison Stables. Arise, a six-year-old He Did horse, heads a field of 11 who will compete in the tenth renewal of the 0,000 Camden Handicap here tomorrow, as this meeting sets the stage for its climax on Saturday, with the running of the Jersey Stakes. The Camden is at six furlongs and Arise, under 124 pounds, will be opposed by Harborvale Stables Dark Peter and Palatine Stables Woodchuck, both assigned 122 pounds; Henry A. Kimballs Algasir and G. M. Cohens Jess Linthicum, each with 118, and scaling down to Larry S. MacPhails General Staff, who appears particularly dangerous under his light impost of 109 pounds. It shapes up as a very good race, and the highweights may be considered on a par with former winners of this fixture, that include such classy sprinters as Brownie, The Doge, Polynesian and Olympia. The public will center its betting on the three top members of the field, with Dark Peter looming as a lukewarm choice. Seeking First 52 Score Arise has shown inherent class through several seasons of campaigning and deserves the position of honor, although he will be seeking his initial triumph ofthis season. He is a versatile performer" customed to shouldering weight, and last year he accounted for the seven-furlong Carter Handicap, the mile and a sixteenth Questionnaire Handicap and the mile and a quarter Monmouth Handicap. The Canadian-owned, stalwart has been out twice this spring, finishing second to-War Poppy in a mile allowance event and fourth to Mameluke in the Metropolitan Handicap. Both were very good efforts and it appears that he will be ready to put his best speed on tomorrow, with jockey Logan Batchellor to do the asking. , Dark Peter, who last year was running at this track for cheap claiming prices, has steadily grown in stature and his record this spring is practically without fault. He was beaten, only three-quarters of a length by Calumet Farms Kentucky Derby victor. Hill Gail, opening his campaign at Keene-land in the Phoenix Handicap. The four-year-old Piping Rock gelding then" came to New York, where he sizzled over the Wide-ner course at Belmont Park in 1:09 to capture the Toboggan Handicap by. a half-length over Crafty Admiral, then came right back in the Roseben" to win handily by three lengths over Northern Star. His assignment jumps up from 113 pounds oyer his Roseben triumph, and this will be his first real test for weight-carrying ability. Jockey Fernando Fernandez will be in the irons. Woodchuck Well Regarded Palatine Staples Woodchuck, a sensation last winter in Florida, and one of the few horses to recently defeat Spartan Valor, is highly esteemed locally. The four-year-old son of Pasteurized ran six furlongs in 1:10 here last week to defeat Algasir" by a little better than two lengths, and he also captured the Paumonok Handicap t .the beginning of the northern season with a clear-cut decision over Squared Away. Intervening these two victories was the Jamaica Handicap, in which he suffered a rough trip and was well beaten. Jimmy Stout is named as the rider. Although beaten by Woodchuck last week, Algasir tomorrow - receives a six-pound concession in weight. Observers of the meeting between these two were also mainly of the opinion that Algasir might have done better had he been rated closer to the pace, and this gelding figures to be a tough foe. Jess Linthicum just galloped in his last essay here, but the only way that he would really loom a threat is if the track should become muddy. . Despite being at the bottom of the weight column, MacPhails General Staff is not to be disregarded. Last year he ran with the best sophomores around and, although beaten in his 1952 debut here last week, he was obviously short for the effort with indications that he will be mighty sharp tomorrow.
