Sickles Image Vies With Dixie Flyer And Seven Other Alger Memorial Rivals Holiday Feature at Detroit i Also Brings Out Pur Sang, Bully Boy and Bated Breath By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent DETROIT, Mich., May 29. The F. M. Alger Memorial Purse,, at six furlongs for three-year-olds and older, will serve as the main attraction on a splendid nine-race program arranged for presentation tomorrow at this modern Detroit race course. Nine shifty racers are entered in the holiday feature and Clarence Hartwicks homebred and Michigan-owned filly, Sickles Image, is expected to go to the post favored oyer her eight rivals. Billie Fisk is to handle the four-year-old daughter of Sickletoy and Ariel Image, who will be the high weight at 115 pounds under the Alger Purse allowance clause. Although Sickles Image was beaten here in the Inaugural Purse, it must be remembered that the Hartwick miss raced over a track deep in mud and not at all to her liking. Mrs. George C. WhiteSDixie Flyer and Starboard Stables Bated Breath whipped the Sickletoy filly in the opening day headliner and both these quick sprinters are scheduled to start in the Alger. Dixie Flyer is to carry the Duntreath Farm silks in the dash and she will shoulder 113 . pounds, while Bated Breath gets in with 109 pounds. Dixie Flyer was recently acquired from Mrs. White by P. L. Grissom, master of Duntreath Farm, in a private transaction. Theodore D. Buhl, Motor City sportsman, will rely on Bee Lee Tee, 106, and Green Saber, lightly imposted with 94 pounds, in the Alger, while Mrs. E. E. -Dale Shaffers colors are to be carried by Bully Boy, a better-than-average Bull Dog-sired stallion who is to take up 110 pounds. Others in the Alger overnight field are Grace Kosibas Is There, 114; Springbrook Farms stakes winner, Pur Sang, 112, and Mrs. Charles O. Schweitzers Radical, 110 pounds. . Sickles Image and Pur Sang, a pair of stakes winners, were attracting the most attention here today. The former won the Los Cerritos Handicap at Santa Anita in February before she bowed in the Iaugural Purse and her 1951 campaign was dotted with such important triumphs as the Ashland Stakes at Keeneland, Arlington Parks Cleopatra Stakes, Modesty Handicap, and Matron Handicap, her earnings for nine winning trips grossing over 19,000. Motor City-owned by Reuben Knowall, who maintains "Springbrook Farm, Pur Sang, a four-year-old colt, is the get of Side Boy and Contrary Mary. One of the best thoroughbreds quartered at the local Conti7iued on Page Forty-Eight Sickles Image, Eight Others Seeking Alger Detroits Holiday Feature Also Draws Dixie Flyer, Pur Sang Continued from Page One oval, the handsome chestnut won the Tamarack Purse at Golden Gate in March, stepping that six furlongs through the mud in 1:13 under an 112-pound burden. Pur Sangs top performances, however, were his cleverly-achieved victories in the 1950 renewal of the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes and the 1951 running of the Pea-body Memorial. Dixie Flyer, a five-year-old Blue Flyer-sired mare, raced impressively to annex the Inaugural Purse and, previous to that engagement, she won last autumn at Churchill Downs over such quick company as the 1950 Kentucky Oaks victress, Aris Mona, Sickles Image and Heavenly Hash, among others. She also scored in two other engagements during her four-year-old season campaign, and her recent morning trials have been exceedingly pleasing to her handlers. Bated Breath, whose second in the Inaugural proved that she is in excellent condition, holds a strong chance for Alger major honors. The five-year-old Okapi-sired mare won four races in Florida before her shipment north and trainer C. P. Sowers is of the opinion that she is one of the better thoroughbreds to come under his supervision in some time. Bully Boy won four of a dozen engagements last year and he recently captured the six-furlong Scholarship Day Purse at Gulfstream Park, skipping the sprint distance under 117 pounds in 1:10. Is There, successful in the Rock X Purse at the Lincoln Fields meeting May 13, whipped such speedy performers on that occasion as Lilly Valenti, Asphalt, Futura-maticand Tattenham, among others. Henry Forrests Traveler and the G and G Stables Dear Tint appear to hold an edge in the band of seven sprinters engaged for the six-furlong Huron Purse, chief supporting event.
