Chaomanell Eliminated In British Golf Tournament Scotsman Blair Downs Both; t Stranahan, McHale, Ward Only Americans to Sirvve By HENRY THORNBERRY PRESTWICK, Scotland, May 29 UP .A 34-year-old Scottish whiskey exporter, still recovering from a bad automobile smash-up, eliminated "defending, champion Dick Chapman and U. S. titleholder Billy Maxwell from the British Amateur Golf Tournament today, but Frank Stranahan and two other Yanks survived this "black Thursday" of the links for tomorrows quarterfinals. Maj. David Blair was encased in a plaster cast after suffering five broken bones in a crash in November, but he gave no sign of it today as he ripped through Chapman, the - tournament favorite from Pinehurst, N. C, 3 and 2, in the mornings fifth round arid then chopped down Maxwell, 4 and 3, in the afternoon sixth round. Blair, who eliminated .Merrill Hval, of Portland, Ore., yesterday, delightedly insisted he was due "three American scalps" in this tournament because thrice in recent-years he was knocked out of -the British Amateur by invading Americans. But if the U. S.-victory flame flickered, it did not die as Stranahan Jimmy McHale, of Philadelphia, and Harvie Ward, of Tarboro, N. C, scored double victories today to gain the quarterfinals. Stranahan downed Boddy Lees, of Scotland, 3 and 1, in the fifth round and British police champion Jim Walker, 3 and 2, in the sixth. McHale Beats Soccer Star McHale beat Scottish soccer star Minty Miller, 5 and 4, in - the fifth round and I Crawford Gray, of Scotland, 3 arid 1, iri the I sixth. Ward whippedAlex Whyte, of Scotland, 5 and 4, in the fifth and Sam Has-well, of Scotland, 5 and 4, in the sixth. In addition to Chapman and Maxwell, two other Yanks were -bounced out this bitter cold and rainy day. Frank Strafaci, of Garden City, N. Y., beat British Walker cupper Jim Wilson, 1 up in 20 holes in the fifth round, but collapsed xn the first nine to lose to Joe Carr, of England, 4 and 3, in the sixth. .John Penrose, of Miami, Fla., lost to Australian Keppell Enderby, 4 and 3, in the fifth round. Blair, in scoring his mighty upsets, was driving straight down the middle of the narrow fairways which his American opponents struggled from bunker to bunker. Chapman won the first hole, but was in trouble - thereafter. Blair went ahead on the third when Chapman bunkered himself into a double bogey seven. Still 1 up after nine, Blair won the eleventh with a birdie, two, took the thirteenth, lost the fourteenth to Chapmans 14-foot, putt birdie, and won the fifteenth with a birdie three while Chapman went into the rough for a five. The match ended when they halved the sixteenth. Blair Takes On Maxwell Then Blair took on Maxwell. He went ! two up on the first nine by sinking a 10-f ooter for a birdie .two on the second and a nine-footer for a birdie three on the sixth. He won the eleventh with par when ! Maxwell drove past the green and missed a two-foot putt, and he won the twelfth when Maxwell drove into the rough and was short on his second shot. After that, the cool Scot siriiply played out the string for his triumph. Stranahan, meanwhile, was charging after his third British Amateur title. He went 1 down to Lees on the fifth, but pulled even with a nine-foot putt on the sixth. He went, ahead on the ninth from back of the green, won the tenth on a 12-footer, lost the eleventh to the courses deadly bunkers, and won the twelfth and thirteenth when Lees three-putted each time. He lost the fourteenth to Lees 55-foot putt, but won the match on the seventeenth when Lees overshot the green. The Toledo, Ohio, strong boy had little trouble with Walker, going one up on the front nine, taking the twelfth, went on in two and going "out of a trap to hole a 36-,footer on the fourteenth to the cheers of 600. McHale whizzed through Miller with ease, taking the last three holes of the first nine for a commanding lead. He also went 3 up over Gray on the first nine. Ward went two up on the first nine of each of his matches and then waited out opponents errors. Strafaci put his tee shot one foot from the pin on the twentieth for the birdie that beat Wilson in the fifth round, but Can-won five of the first seven holes to crush the Garden City golfer in the sixth round. In tomorrow mornings quarterfinals , McHale plays Ward; Stranahan plays Charles Carlow; Blair meets Carr, and Robin Cater meets Enderby.
