JNITED PRESS NEWS BRIEFS Red Prisoner Killed During Demonstration KOJE ISLAND, Korea, May 29. One Communist prisoner of war was killed accidentally and one was wounded tonight in compound 66 after U. S. and British troops hurled tear gas bombs and fired rifles in the air to break up a demonstration by North Korean officers. The shooting came several hours after allied troops, moving into a prison compound for the first" time under the new "get tough" program of Brig. Gen. Haydon Boatner, broke up the demonstrations and smashed "headquarters" huts inside the barbed wire. Truman Warns on Revamping of WSB WASHINGTON, D. C, May 29. President Truman told the Senate today that revamping of the Wage Stabilization Board without management and labor representatives would encourage strikes and lockouts. Mr. Truman sent a long letter to vice-president Alben W. Barkley citing "serious implications" of provisions in the pending bill extending the Defense Production Act. Berline Police Beat Back Red Rioters BERLIN, Germany, May 29. West Berlin police, armed with tear-gas grenades and water jets, beat back an attempt ;to-night by 6,000 rioting Communists" youths to invade the U. S. sector and arrested more than 100. Armed Services to Go Ahead with UMT WASHINGTON, D. C, May 29. Draft director Lewis B. Hershey suggested today that the armed services go ahead with universal military training without waiting for further action by Congress. Hershey told a Senate armed services subcommittee that a universal training program can be set up under the present draft law. Action Dwindles on Korean Front SEOUL, Korea, May 29. Chinese artillery and mortars leveled their heaviest barrage of the year on to United Nations advance positions on the western front yesterday, but action dwindled today to "routine" patrol fights. Allied infantrymen threw Communists off three hill positions northwest of the truce village of Panmun-jom today and American tanks blasted a Red buildup area in the "iron triangle." Says U.S. Will Beat Reds on Jet Production WASHINGTON, D. C, May 29. Defense production administrator Manly Fleisch-man said today the United States will catch up with and outstrip Russian jet plane production early next year. In his final news conference as defense produc-. tion boss, Fleischmann said, "We are on the eve of major production of military goods." Jacques Duclos Jailed in France PARIS, France May 29. Examining magistrate Andre Jacquinot signed tonight an order charging Jacques Duclos, Communist party leader, with acts against the internal security of France. Duclos was taken immediately to Fresnes prison, 10 miles south of the capital. President Vetoes Tidelands Bill WASHINGTON, D. C, May 29. President Truman today vetoed the bill to give the states title to oil-rich tidelands. He said the measure ignored the rights of the nation and its whole population. DeGauIIe Followers Score Policies PARIS, France, May 29. Nearly half of Gen. Charles DeGaulles parliamentary following drafted a letter to the general tonight telling him they can no longer give blind obedience to his policies. Senate Defeats Move to End Controls WASHINGTON, D. C, May 29. The Senate today defeated a Republican-sponsored move to end wage and price controls June 30.
