J. MURPHY Staff Correspondent SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, HI., May 4. — Victoria Cross, an outsider from the stable of J. N. Nugent, won the best race here today, when he beat seven others under the wire in the Lombard Purse. The winners price was 7.80 and he was ridden to success by Harold Keene for the latters second win of the afternoon. Victoria Cross beat Ida C, another long shot, by two and one-half lengths, with Bobs Ace ending up in third place, and the favored Sailors Delite being fourth. The distance was seven furlongs. Several Take Turns at Making Pace Several racers in the eight-horse field took a crack at making the pace. Jimmys Doll, showing in front early, led for a half, and then Tordar took over to show the way briefly and finally Victoria Cross shot to the fore nearing the stretch turn to have the situation well in hand thereafter. Sailors Delite, lacking early foot, was caught in close quarters next the rail early and was unable to find an opening. She was going well at the finish. The track was very heavy and the slowest time of the meeting was registered at all distances. The weather was cloudy but the attendance of 11,190 was regarded as good. The Daily Double paid 89.20 when Happy Age, who was fairly well backed, Continued on Page Forty-Three Victoria Cross Gains Surprise Accounting in Lombard Purse Continued from Page One took the opener, and Thirza, an outsider, won the second. Happy Age, ridden by Eldon Coffman, was up to beat the pace-setting Ponder Pat, and Thirza outfinished the favored Sun Idol Jr. The latter lost the race through going wide. Bill Carstens rode Thirza. Frank Keene, brother of the tracks leading rider, Harold Keene, put up a good finish on Busy Lad to have that gelding defeat the well-played Bonquest in a driving finish in the third race, with Marwood, the favorite, taking third money. Another public choice went down to defeat when Brown Pirate, an odds-on choice, was beaten by Hasty Sun in the fourth. Hasty Sun came from last place under the guidance of apprentice Joe Valenti. Patio Patter, a Dixiana cast-off who now races in the colors of William Hal Bishop, was up in the final stride to nip Some Charge in the fifth. Some Charge led for every step of the journey with the exception of the last one. Crossbow Girl, the favorite, was third. Harold Keene was in the irons on Patio Patter.
