Fastest Front-Running Win / CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 4. — A detail in the seventy-ninth running of the Kentucky Derby here Saturday that was not generally noted in connection with the time was that Dark Star registered the fastest front-running victory in the history of the classic. The brown colt took the track shortly after the break and made every pole a winning one, completing the mile and a quarter in 2:02. Last year, Hill Gail covered the distance in 2:01%, but he did not go into the van until after the first half-mile, coming from behind Hannibal. In 1931 Twenty Grand won in 2:014s and in 1941 Whirlaway was timed in 2:01%, which stands as the track record, bat they, too, were outfooted in the early stages.
