Brazen Brat Scores for New Owner Triumphs Shortly After Being Sold Pistorio Colorbearer Whips Sweet Vermouth Decisively; 11,585 Fans at Pimlico By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent PIMLICO, Baltimore. Md., May 4. — Purchased during the afternoon by Mrs. Samuel H. Pistorio, Brazen Brat made an immediate return on the investment when she scored an easy victory in the six-furlong Rogers Purse as the 21 -day Pimlico session commenced here today. Danny Sheas Sweet Vermouth was second, almost two lengths behind the winner and well clear of Mrs. E. Kendall Weils Lord Admiralty. Brazen Brat, a .60 favorite with the opening day crowd of 11,585, was the third winner of the afternoon for popular Nick Shuk, who completely outclassed his jockey opposition during the recently concluded Bowie meeting. Shuks previous scores were in the third and fourth races astride Bon Lynn and Life Policy, respectively. Brazen Brats time for the six furlongs was a pleasing 1:11% under a weight package of 118 pounds. Formerly owned by Bruce Livies Bobanet Stable, and generally noted as a speed mare, Brazen Brat was taken back during the early stages when it became apparent to Shuk that his mount would be unable to outsprint Sweet Vermouth. The latter, in the meantime, was having an easy time of it and was under wraps while maintaining a clear advangtage along the backstretch and around the turn. In closest pursuit were Mrs. C. O. Schweitzers Radical and Walter A. Edgars Jack the Great. Passes Rivals Quickly While Sweet Vermouths closest rivals had already shown signs of wear after a half mile. Brazen Brat had not yet begun to strut her stuff. Once given the "go ahead" signal, the five-year-old daughter of Sky Raider — Geraldine literally flew by her rivals, including the pacemaking Sweet Vermouth and had already wrested command when straightened for the run to the wire. Brazen Brat was a bitter disappointment in Florida during the past winter, where she was unsuccessful in a trio of starts, but she displayed marked improvement since being returned to the barn of trainer J. Bowes Bond, her regular conditioner. She was third in the Rowe Memorial in her spring debut, then was twice beaten a nose, once by Nimble Fox in 1:10% and once by Scobeyville when that four-year-old equalled the Bowie seven-furlong record.
