► A. W. RU PELT— Saddled the Goodwin homebred, Oil Painting, to win yesterdays first race at Churchill Downs. Hueso Tops Nine-Horse Field In Jersey Trial Allowance Test Cherry Blossom Winner Has4 By Zeus, Bassanio, Scimitar To Defeat at Garden State By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 4. — The Jersey Trial, a ,000 allowance event at one mile and a sixteenth, will feature the program here tomorrow as the meeting enters its second week following the dark Monday that is customary at this course. Nine aspirants to the 0,000 added Jersey Stakes are scheduled for preview performances, headed by Robert P. Levys Hueso, recent victor of the Cherry Blossom Stakes at Bowie, and Mrs. E. Laskers lightly campaigned By Zeus. The Jersey Stakes, which will have its 12th running this coming Saturday, will be decided at one mile and a furlong. It is the most important event for the sophomore division in New Jersey at this stage of the year, and local pride looks for the development of a new stalwart from its list of starters to carry the banner in the remaining two "Triple Crown" events. In 1948 the mighty Citation gathered in the Jersey laurels while sweeping the "Triple Crown" and, although the Kentucky Derby hero, Dark Star, is not eligible to this years renewal, a majority of the Jersey hopefuls are named to the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. Trio Stables Laf f ango, although a doubtful starter due to his ankle trouble, is stabled here at Garden State Park and main hope rests in his appearance on Saturday. Also rated unlikely, but possible starters, are Saxon Stables Invigorator, third in the Kentucky Derby, and Eugene Constantins Royal Bay Gem, who finished fourth. Ran Second in Chesapeake The Jersey Trial field furnishes some likely prospects, of whom Hueso has accomplished the most. The son of Roman — Blois, by Man o War raced well in a Florida campaign and captured the Cherry Blossom Stakes in his second outing at Bowie. In the Chesapeake Stakes he finished second, beaten two lengths by Royal Bay Gem, and would have been closer but for drifting out after being in front at the eighth pole. His last start was a mile and a sixteenth allowance event at Jamaica in which he was outdistanced early and finished sixth. By Zeus, a bred-in-the-purple son of Count Fleet and the classy race mare, Athene, has started only three times in his career and can be accorded an excellent chance for further development. He easily won his initial start at Jamaica this spring, and was well-regarded when beaten off to finish sixth in the Gotham that was won by Native Dancer. Returning to less formidable company, By Zeus again came through triumphantly at Jamaica and ran a mile and a sixteenth in 1:45% to score by a half-length over Dictar. F. I. Wrights Sakr-El-Bahr, a disappointment in a sprint here and most of his other short-distance efforts, seems to improve with every yard of the longer routes, and Blue Stone Farms Scimitar also appears willing to handle the more gruelling distances. Mrs. E. D. Jacobs Joe Jones, although still a maiden, has given some promising efforts, and Bernadotte Stables Dandolo has occasionally shown speed and gameness that makes him another possible threat.
