Yanks Rally to Overtake Tigers, 9-8 Woodlings Single ► Breaks Up Contest Twenty-One Players See Action for New Yorkers; Reynolds Winning Hurler By NORMAN MILLER United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, N. Y., May 20.— Gene Woodling lined a single with the bases filled in the ninth inning today as the New York Yankees overcame an early five-run deficit to edge out the Detroit Tigers, 9-B, and sweep their two-game series. In achieving the victory, manager Csisey Stengel employed 21 players, just three short of the American League record the Yankees set last Sunday in beating the St. Louis Browns. Allie Reynolds, the sixth Yankee pitcher of the day, was credited with his fourth victory of the year. An error by Jerry Priddy set up the Yankees winning run in the ninth. Priddy pulled first baseman Walt Dropo off the bag with a wide throw on a grounder by Billy Martin, the Yankees leadoff man in the ninth. After Gil McDougald advanced Martin to second with a sacrifice, Ray Herbert replaced Bill Wight on the mound for Detroit. Mantle Gets Intentional Walk Mickey Mantle was intentionally walked and Hank Bauer drew an unintentional base on balls to fill the bases. Woodling then broke up the game with a line smash on a 1-2 pitch to left center. The Tigers appeared headed for a rare victory when they drove out starter Ed Lopat in the midst of a five -run fifth inning outburst. A three-run double by Priddy off reliever Ray Scarborough climaxed the inning and gave Detroit a 7-2 lead. Hal Newhouser, seeking his first victory of the season and the 301st of his career, left the game after five innings with a 7-4 lead and the Yankees manhandled his successors. Joe Collins two-run homer off Dave Madison in the sixth narrowed the Tigers lead to 8-7. The Yankees tied the score in the eighth on singles by Woodling and pinch-hitter Johnny Sain and Collins out.
