Seven Named to Contest Mile Event at Beulah Great Plains and Montcalm Are Expected to Draw Much Support By R. E. HURLEY Staff Correspondent BEULAH PARK, Grove City, Ohio, May 20. — Seven routers, who have richer and longer races on their minds later in this meeting, match strides at a flat mile in the Atkinson-Dauksch Purse, which tops the eight-race program at Beulah Park on Thursday. The title does not flatter the famous riding name of Atkinson, but rather a Columbus insurance agency which annually sponsors a purse race. Hepry Fields trusty gelding, Great Plains, and Oder and Greens French-bred, Montcalm, are two routers who may find the mile distance a trifle short, but must attract more support than Blue Galahad, Shirley Jeff, Respectable, Petite Goutte and Shalam, who fill the seven-horse field. All horses have been raced locally and the benefit of a race over the track will be of equal advantage to all. Great Plains is a 10-year-old gelding by Omaha — Unmasked who represents a breeding cross of the Brookmeade Stable a few years ago aimed at producing cup animals. Although Great Plains never lived up to the planning, he has been a gem of steadiness in the past years and last year had two victories to his credit, Billy Sackett, one rider who improves with distance, will handle the gelding who totes top weight of 118 pounds in the race. Montcalm, a name which recalls the Plains of Abraham in the French and Indian war, is the natural rival of the American-bred Great Plains. He is bred along French lines, being a six-year-old gelding by Tourbillion — Mitidja. He, too, was a double winner during the 1952 racing campaign and showed some flash of strength in his only Beulah outing. Donald Pink-staff will ride Montcalm, who gets in with 115 pounds. Shirley Jeff has a strong chance to inject herself in the picture as the filly usually runs well fresh and is in fine fettle right now.
