Thirty-Two Eligible For Alger Memorial 0,000 Race to Feature . May 30 Holiday Program At Detroit Race Course DETROIT, Mich., May 20. — Thirty-two different horses, the largest field ever nominated for a single race in Michigan, have been named for the 0,000 F. M. Alger Memorial Handicap on May 30, the Detroit Race Course announced today. The Alger is the first of the series of stake races which have been returned to the program at Detroit Race Course this season. It will be run on Memorial Day, two days following opening day on May 28. Because of the bulk of the field, the race may be split into a couple of sections. Several crack handicap runners are on the nomination list — such as K. G. Marshalls Coffee Money, P. L. Grissoms Dixie Flyer, Milton Shagrins Shag Tails, A. F. Walls Golden Trend, Mrs. E. E. Dale Shaffers Sweet Patootia Others Named Others are: Bolingover and Barometro, owned by J. A. Chambers; Truly Fair n., owned by W. G. Reynolds; Ever Bright and Our Challenge, J. C. Pollard; Crownlet, Duval Headley; Sedgeview, John Bower; Little Donor and Black Racer, George White; Cajac and Vantage, M. H. Van-Berg; Mohammedan, I. J. Collins; Second Avenue, T. D. Buhl; Peu a Peu, Keene Gurnee; Radical, C. O. Schweitzer; Bated Breath, Starboard Stable, Air Mail, Warner L. Jones; Sonic, Jerry Lynch; Precious Stone, Arthur Barnes; Biddy Bid, J. R. Collins; Abisok, Grace Kosiba; Mon Pharo, Reverie Knoll Farms; Little Doc, R. A. Paracheck; Whiff enpoof and First Refusal, P. L. Grissom. The Alger is a six-furlong sprint under handicap conditions for three-year-olds and upward. Sickles Image won the race in 1952. Announcement of the giant-sized field came as the tempo of activity at the track was swiftened by new arrivals in the barns. With Churchil Downs now closed, and the Michigan meeting only eight days away, hundreds of horses are arriving daily, the total stall capacity being 1,386. The track was jammed at daylight today with horses being sent through training exercises.
