Andre Is Awarded Suffolk Purse Over Grandma Josie Filly Swerves Into River Divide Colt During Run Through Stretch By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 20. — The featured mile and a sixteenth event on todays Suffolk Downs program was interesting from the time the horses entered the track until many minutes after the unofficial finish had been posted on the infield tote board. M. G. Dohertys Grandma Josie, ridden by apprentice Allen Rose, led her five rivals most of the trip, finishing a length clear of River Divide Farms Andre, with Ralph Lowes Regal another neck back. Elilio Rodriguez, rider of Andre, lodged a claim of foul against the winner and the stewards called on the pictures. It was approximately 17 minutes later when the announcement that Grandma Josie was guilty of swerving in the stretch and hence the numbers were reversed on the board to make Andre the official winner. Grandma Josie was placed second. While the horses were parading post-ward in the feature, Jimmy Durante, appearing in a local night club, made his appearance in the paddock lane and the word quickly spread among the 12,142 patrons. The majority of the fans attempted to line the rails and the celebrated comedian was besieged with autograph seekers. The obliging Durante took up the slack during the delay and should have a tired arm because of the hundreds of signatures he gave out. Grandma Josie clearly dominated the early running of the ■dddle-dlstance event, taking command after a half mile, increasing her margin before leaving the back-stretch. Andre, the early leader, remained within striking distance coming around the turns on the inside. Entering the stretch, Rose allowed Grandma Josie to come out slightly, shortening the distance between the two leaders. Meanwhile Regal ranged up on the outside and the favored Nola Hash began moving along the rail. The leader refused to give away command as Rose applied the whip and Andre, challenging along the inside, suddenly veered to the outside. As quickly as the challenger moved out, Rodriguez sent him back to the inside and the crowd took up the cal lof foul. However, it wasnt until Rodriguez had unsaddled Andre that a foul was lodged against the winner and the stewards explained that the leader was guilty of swerving and impeding Andre. Overlooked in the wagering, Andre paid a tidy 0.40. The time of Grandma Josie in completing the mile and a sixteenth was a commendable 1:44%.
