This quartet is in the van, statistically, in the 1953 official figures compiled by Daily Racing Form — The Morning Telegraph that are inclusive of May 25. Shoemaker, the taciturn, transplanted Texan from the Pacific Coast, is setting a torrid pace in the race for national jockey laurels, an honor with which he is not unfamiliar. The "little man," who has had the pleasure of visiting the charmed circle 164 times since the turn of the year, shared the honor of pacing the pack with Joe Cul-mone in 1950, each getting 388 winners, then a record Tony DeSpirito broke the mark, first established by the late Walter Miller, when he came up with 390 saddle successes last year. Its conjectural, of course, but if Shoemaker continues to score with the regularity he has shown to date through the remaining months of the year, he could become the first American reinsman ever to ride 400 winners in any one year. And, if he rides "at least 300 winners" this year, hell be the first ever to ride that many three years in succession. Harold "Red" Keene has displaced DeSpirito for second spot, 112 winners to 107. Passes Mark-Ye-Well Alfred G. Vanderbilts two-year-old champion of 1952 and potential three-year -olds and Horse of the Year king, Native Dancer, vaulted ahead of Calumet Farms swift four-year-old, Mark-Ye-Well, in the | leading money-winning horses list by virtue of his Preakness score. The Vanderbilt t gray has earned 09,750 this season to the Calumet thoroughbreds 99,050. Hasty House Farms Oil Capitol, leading money winner in training, is third with 30,580 to "his" credit. Incidentally, Native Dancer went into thirteenth place among the leading money . winning horses of all time by beating Jamie K. and Dark Star, among others, and picking up the 5,200 first prize in the Preakness. Native Dancers lifetime total for less than two years of campaigning now is 40,245. Calumet, whose first string has been idle since the close of the Kentucky season the so-called second string as at Hollywood Park, holds a commandable lead over Vanderbilt and the rest among the leading money-winning owners with 72,272. Vanderbilts runner-up total is 80,480. with the Greentree Stable third* 98,345. Calumet, which has led this select list eight times in the 12 years since 1941, now is awaiting the rich enducements at the coordinated 67-day Arlington- Washington Parks meetings at Chicago, starting June 22, and Mrs. Gene Markey is reported to have a strong hand for this summers and falls overall events. McDaniel, christened Robert H., is maintaining his lofty perch atop the trainers with 79 victories since January 1. His closest rival right now is William Hal Bishop, who is plying his trade on the Chicago circuit. This No. 1 business is nothing new to McDaniel, because the Pacific Coast conditioner seems to have taken up where Hirsch Jacobs left off in 1944, having been top man in the yearly national training ranks for the past three years.
