i l I • • * • » ; ! , . ; 1 ; [ Winter Land in Popular Victory at Ascot Park Favorite, With Plesa Aboard, Runs Seven Furlongs in 1 :27 By RONALD KRANCER Staff Correspondent ASCOT PARK, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, May 27. — Stefan and Cashels Winter Land, ridden by Eddie Plesa, scored a popular tally in one of the better races here today. A crowd of 4,100 turned x ut to witness the program despite nippy weather. Winter Land moved around Queens Myrtle on the final bend and then drew clear, winning handily by four and one-half lengths. Deb-Bits rand third in the seven-horse affair. The winner was the favorite, second of the afternoon, and paid .80, running the seven furlongs in 1:27 over a fast track. Plesa had Winter Land well off the early pace, content to allow Deb-Bits and Keen Tulip race as a team onthe backstretch. Rounding the far turn, Queens Myrtle, with Louis Rivera aboard, moved up on the outside to gain the lead and Winter Land, responding gamely to pressure, also moved very fast while on the outside of Queens Myrtle. At the furlong marker, the black daugh- ter of Sky Raider, who was bred by Mrs. E. H. Augustus, drew clear and, in the ; final sixteenth of a mile, just toyed with her opposition. It was the first tally of the season for , . Winter Land in six starts. Last season, she was in the money six times in 17 starts, earning ,345. Mrs. J. L. Wileys Apricot, ridden by . Richard Gordon, scored a lop-sided tally in the third race and returned .50. Apricot ran six and one-half furlongs in 1:22. Gentle Gal was second, seven lengths in [ arrears, a scant nose before Cleveland Skinners Papa Coon. It was the first winner of the meeting for young Gordon, who came here two weeks ago from Wheeling Downs. The winner was saddled by Benson Brown.
