J., June 13. — Jouett Shouses Cinda, the only filly in the field of 14, scampered off with the Oceanport Handicap here today, as Monmouth Park opened its 1953 racing season before a record crowd estimated at 22,700, although the weather was miserable at best. A driving rain fell through most of the afternoon and reached its height just as the Oceanport field broke. Second, coming from far back, was Alfred Vanderbilts Indian Land, who failed to give his owner a creditable double by five and a half lengths. Third was Jan Burkes topweighted Squared Away, under 127- pounds, a length and a half back. Cinda was overlooked in the wide open betting and paid 3.80 after travelling the six furlongs over a sloppy and deep strip in 1:12. Jimmy Stout, the perennial Jersey favorite, rode the daughter of Occupy— Arden Lass, by Ariel. The Oceanport took place only a few minutes after the Belmont was renewed in which Native Dancer defeated Jamie k., Continued on Page Forty-Six Filly Cinda Scampers Off WithOceanportHandicap Takes Measure of Male Rivals before 22,700 Monmouth Fans , Continued from Page One and Indian Land would have provided a second stake for his young owner, but Cinda had too much speed for her male rivals. The four-year-old filly, one of the top sprinters in the land, won a division of the Regret Handicap over this strip last season, in addition to other stakes victories. She started twice previously this year, winning her first outing, an allowance sprint at Pimlico, then tiring in the recent Colonial Handicap to finish fourth. The net value of the pceanport was 3,700, bringing her total for the year up to 7,300. The filly was rigged at 113 pounds, five less than Indian Lad. Rain was being whipped in the direction of the stands as the field for the Ocean-port went to the gate. When they broke, they were all in close alignment for the first few steps, but Cinda, from an inside post, gradually drew out to an early lead. Squared Away also slipped from out of the surge of horse flesh and went up to challenge the miss, while Eatontown and Northern Star were also well up. Indian Land was well back as the field traveled down the backstretch. Cinda had more speed than Squared Away could match and resolutely drew away -from her older rival and by the time they had straightened away for the drive was well in front and home free. Northern Star moved up on the rail, was momentarily blocked, then got through and came to the middle of the track for his bid. Indian Land saved all the ground in the world as the field fanned out on the turn and slipped through on the rail. There was no doubt as to the winner as Cinda just rolled along and Indian Land came up on the inside to draw away from the tiring Squared Away for second money. Northern Star finish fourth.
