HAWAIKI was sent into a long early lead, retained a comfortable advantage to the late stretch and held sway when roused. FLEET GOLD made up ground steadily to be getting to the winner. LADY SAILOR was always formidable, but was not good enough. FLAXEN MANE closed ground steadily. LOVELY WAVE failed to rally sufficiently TRAIL OF GOLD could not keep up. JEMAR broke tardily. STAUNCH FRIEND .assumed command soon after the start, drew clear gradually to the stretch and just lasted over FLICKA STAR. The latter was slow to reach best stride, was forced to race wide while rallying and was rapidly wearing down the winner. RUGGED BOY raced forwardly placed, but lacked, the necessary rally. ED THE GREAT was unable to enter contention. PASSING PARADE seemed unable to handle the sloppy going. BERNROUGH was outrun. BEACH ADMIRAL showed nothing. Scratched— 89163 Mongoose, 115. SCIMITAR, unhurried while in close attendance to the pace, saved ground while wresting command from CAESAR DID, then clung tenaciously to a narrow advantage to outfinish, INVIGORATOR. The latter was allowed to settle into best stride, saved ground to attain prominence entering the stretch, then was not good enough despite strong urging. CAESAR DID raced a bit wide while in front rounding the first turn, set the pace under steadying restraint and fought it out gamely. COUNTY CLARE, under steadying restraint while holding a favorable position, rallied from the outside nearing the stretch, then gave way gradually. V-TWO was unable to menace. NEBULLUS showed nothing.
