Portland Meadows Purses And Stakes at New High Total Distribution of 48,000 Announced for 50-Day Race Meet PORTLAND, Ore., June 25.— The largest and most ambitious stakes and purse schedule in the history of the Portland Turf Association has been announced by Portland Meadows race track, whose 1953 sea-on is slated to gei under way July 14. A full 50 days of thoroughbred and quarter-horse racing is in store for Northwest turf fans with a total purse distribution of over 48,000. Racing will be conducted four nights a week and one Saturday afternoon. Post time for the week .days has been set for 7:00 p. m. and on Saturday afternoons at 1:30 p. m. The program will consist of nine races daily and ten on Saturday afternoon. Ecah card will have at least two events for the ever popular quarter-horses. Nineteen handicap events have been scheduled for the big summer meeting, with the feature attractions being the ,000 Portland Handicap at a mile and one sixteenth on September 26 and the ,000 Oregon Breeders Futurity, at six furlongs, to be run the final day, October 3. Another race of particular interest to Oregon horsemen is the second running of the Oregon Derby, at a mile and a sixteenth, set for September 19, with an added purse of ,500. Bill Shuling, who is returning this year for the second time in the post of racing secretary, announced that he will card at least two races which will feature women riders. This was inaugurated last year and met with great success. The races for the women are subjected to approval by the Oregon State Racing Commission. The purse figures announced will be increased during the meeting if the mutuel handle warrants.
