Split Boardwalk to Sunglow, Tuscany Latter Chalks Up Fourth Win in Row Runs Mile in 1 :3645, Leading At All Markers; Brookmeade Runner Registers Big Upset By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent ATLANTIC CITY, Mays Landing, N. J., Aug. 22. Two thrilling editions of Atlantic Citys one mile Boardwalk Handicap over the turf brought out a pair of proficient grass runners as Mrs. Samuel M. Pistorios Tuscany and Brookmeade Stables Sunglow won their respective divisions in their introductions to the grass sport. Tuscany, a five-year-old son of The Rhymer was within three-fifths of a second of the course record while being timed in 1:36, while Sunglow, a Sun Again six-year-old, needed 1:37 for his triumph in the first division. Tuscany, highweight of the nominees for the event under 126 pounds, went postward as an odds-on favorite with the record throng of 32,367 and returned .80. Sunglow was sadly neglected in the betting and paid 6.40, while carrying a light burden of 108 pounds. Tuscany was ridden by Nick Shuk and finished three .lengths clear of Joe Gavegnanos Joey Boy, with Brook-meades Picador third. Sunglow enjoyed the saddle services of Charlie Burr who was three and one-half lengths clear of Cain Hoy Stables Armageddon, with Samuel A. Pecks Potpourri third. Sunglows victory was worth 2,550 to Mrs. Sloane, while Mrs. Pistorio picked up a purse of 2,150. Tuscany has now won five stakes this year while amassing earnings of 0,100. Two new wagering records were established during the afternoon, with the 01,985 bet on the second division of the Boardwalk surpassing the previous single race high of 94,139 sent through the machines last week on the Mermaid Handicap. The total handle of ,824,340 also was a new mark, exceeding last Saturdays handle of ,601,847. Second Division Better Half With Tuscany in the second division of the fixture, this end packed the most lustre, but his victory was little more than a gallop. Shuk sent him into a clear lead in the opening sixteenth and immediately moved to the inner hedge, a- position he held throughout while coasting on the front end. Picador, trying to make a sweep of it for Brookmeade, madean early effort to stay within striking distance of Tuscany but proved no match. Those same early efforts enabled Joey Boy to finish two and one-half lengths clear of him at the wire, as D. J. Schneiders Elixir finished fourth. Bobs Alibi seemed a sure winner of the first division when he lunged through the inner hedge when struck by the whip approaching the furlong marker, then fell Continued on Page Fifty Sunglow and Tuscany Score in Split Boardwalk Handicap Continued from Page Three and sent Boulmetis to the ground in a heap. While the full extent of Boulmetis injuries could not be determined, preliminary examination revealed a possible fracture of the left shoulder. He was removed to the Atlantic City Hospital for further examinations and X-rays. The victory of Sunglow was his first since the 1951 Widener Handicap at Hia-leah Park, following which he was idle for more than two years. He raced once at Gulfstream Park this past March and again here last week, finishing far back on each occasion. Sunglow was far behind the leaders during the first six furlongs of his race, while the early pace was being cut out by John L. McKnights speedy Blue Rhymer. As expected, the full mile proved too much for this filly and she gave way in favor of Bobs Alibi. When Bobs Alibi came a cropper, the race developed into a wide-open affair, but the result was soon, apparent as Burr sent Sunglow to the fore and allowed him to ramble clear of the opposition as Armageddon, after being left with a head advantage a furlong from the wire, saved the place by a length and" a half over Potpourri. Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs Royal Governor showed his best race of the year but faded to fourth position. A new high for Daily Double wagering was set with a total of 60,810 passing through the windows.
