Spartan Monday to Travel Mile for Purse of 0,000 WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, HI., Aug. 22. A preview of the Washington Park Handicap will be presented at the Homewood course Monday, when 11 stakes stars take up the issue in the 0,000. Spartan Handicap. Eight of the overnight field are among the 83 still eligible for the 70,000 handicap that will close out the meeting Labor Day, September 7. They are Calumet Farms Mark-Ye-Well, Hasty House Farms entry of Oil Capitol and Ruhe, Cliff ord Mooers Cyclotron, Dixianas Sub Fleet, Reverie Knoll Farms Smoke Screen, Kin Ranchs High Scud, and K. G. Marshalls Coffee Money. Completing the field for the mile Spartan are T. D. Buhls Second Avenue, Buddah Stables Sunny Dale, and Mrs. H. L. Nathensons Guy. Topweight of 126 for the Spartan goes to Mark-Ye-Well. He will have the services of Eddie Arcaro, with whom he finished fifth in the recent Clang Handicap. The Bull Lea colt made his first appearance in almost six months in the seven, furlong Clang, which went to Cyclotron. In three -starts last winter he collected 99,-050, winning the San Fernando Stakes, Santa Anita Maturity and Handicap. Last year he carried Calumets Devils Red to victory in the Arlington Classic, Clang Handicap, and American Derby. It was discovered after the running of the Clang taht Mark-Ye-Well had "grabbed himself" and for a time there was serious doubt that he would be seen again at this meeting. However, "lie healed rapidly, and appears to be in racing condition. Arcarb said after the Clang that the four-year-old star didnt take to the action of the race at all well. He said he believed another race or two may be needed to bring up the colt to his previous form. Clang Distance Too Short Oil Capitol, winner of the Arlington Handicap, didnt race well in the Clang, and finished seventh. It is believed in some quarters that the sprint distance was too short for the six-year-old gray son of Mah-moud. The veteran will be under 120 pounds Monday, and Gerald "Porch lias tentatively been given the saddle assign-, ment. Ruhe gets in the Spartan with 115 pounds, and Johnny Adams is likely to get the mount. The five-year-old gray Menow gelding hasnt Taced since the Arlington Handicap, in which he wound up seventh. He started the northwest suburban meeting by winning the Equipoise Mile, and in two grass handicaps the Stars and Stripes and Laurance Armour Memorial he finished fifth. Cyclotrons Clang victory marked his first Washington Park effort. He came on from the Hollywood Park meeting where he won two allowance sprints. That represents his 1953 campaign thus far. The five-year-olds son of Pensive will be ridden by John Heckmann, who piloted him to the Clang win. The weight Monday will be 119 pounds. Sub Fleet is another Spartan starter under 119 pounds. It will be his first start since the Arlington Handicap, in which he finished second. Prior to that he ran one of the fastest times for a mile at the meeting, 1:35, beating a good field which included Sunny Dale. Earlier at Arlington, Sub Fleet ran second in the Equipoise Mile, and fourth in Hill Gails record six furlongs. Second Avenue wound up eleventh to the winner in the Clang. He gets 110 for Mondays mile and will be ridden by Carroll Bierman. The six-year-old son of War Jeep displayed his best efforts so far this year at Detroit, where he captured the Alger Memorial and Michigan Mile. Smoke Screen gets 109 for the Spartan. At Arlington he was fourth in the Arlington Handicap, tenth in the Armour, won an overnight grass handicap, ran sixth in the Stars and Stripes and fourth in the Equipoise. His best racing this year was at Fair. Grounds, where he won the LeCompte, Letellier and New Orleans Handicaps. Smoke Screen breezed a half in :49 Thursday. High Scud came here from New York shortly after finishing third to Tom Fool in the Brooklyn Handicap. He was a winner here last Tuesday. This will be Sunny Dales first start here. The mares last try was good for fourth behind Real Delight in the Arlington Matron. Before that she ran fourth and fifth. All were mile events. Sunny Dale won two handicaps in Florida the Columbiana and Suwanee River. She will carry 104 pounds with W. M. Cook up Monday. Coffee Money failed to score in five Arlington Park starts. His best was the Myrtlewood Handicap, in which he was second to Roaming. Thursday mornings works show three-eights in :35 handily. - HARRY B.
