Badger Rates Call In Broadway Purse Craig Handles Fast Saginaw Runner While Striving for Repeat Hazel Park Score HAZEL PARK, Mich., Aug. 22. The Broadway Purse, a six-furlong condition race for three-year-olds and older, will headline an attractive program Monday at this popular near-Detroit track. Seven fleet sprinters, representing six interests, are named for the dash and the early choice is Saginaw Stables Badger, one of the highweights under the allowance terms at 117 pounds. Jockey Howard Craig, a close third in the local riding standings, will be at the reins on the favorite, according to announcement this morning by the Saginaw Stable trainer, Bryan H. Wise. Badger, a five-year-old Blue Flyer-sired stallion, is a versatile performer on a wet or dry strip and recently defeated Suffki, McGrathiana, Clear Day and Abisok in the six-furlong Pontiac Purse. Previous to his Hazel Park triumph, Badger was good enough to trim Lonoke Flash, Wisenheimer, Bolaris, Round n Round and Abisok in the six-furlong Fenmore Purse at the Detroit Race Course on a sloppy track. Marion H. VanBerg, Nebraska turfman, will start McGrathiana, 117 pounds, arid Fine Fiddle, 112 pounds, in the Broadway. McGrathiana, a four-year-old Halcyon Gift-sired gelding, is a double winner in Michigan this year and, of course, finished third in his most recent engagement, the Pontiac Purse. McGrathianas running-mate, Fine Fiddle, a four-year-old daughter of First Fiddle, is a good class winner, and her recent morning trials have been on the quick side. Others Will Attract Support While the VanBerg pair and Badger undoubtedly will come in for the major share of "tote" support in the Monday principal offering, several others in the field are rated dangerous at the weights. RobertL. Lancasters Nocallula, 112, has displayed occasional flashes of class and Glolite Stables Witch Way, 114 pounds, is an improved racer since beginning his Michigan current campaign. Leclaire Stables speedy Ballydam, 114, and L. R. Smiths Looks. Bold complete the Broadway Purse likely starting band. Jockey Robert Lee Baird, who was one winning mount back of Don Holmes at the beginning of the Saturday card, will guide Nocallula in the Broadway, Peter Gif f ord is engaged for Looks Bold and Gordon Potter rides Ballydam. No reinsmen have been named for the VanBerg duo and Witch Way but it is probable that jockey Willie Cox will be up on McGrathiana or Fine Fiddle. Eight shifty juveniles are scheduled to meet in the six-furlong third event, which shapes up as the best supporting number on the Monday bill. G and G Stables Light Lewis, Ridgefields Apache Love and Mrs. William Zakoors Sky Jeep are expected to go well in the two-year-old dash. The "nightcap" eighth race matches eight tried marathon performers at one mile and three furlongs. Richard A. Con-nells Let Me Thru is the early choice for the event, which is named the Long-Winded Number Three.
