Johnson, White Sox Tip Boston, 1-0 Hose Hurler Yields Only Two Safeties Chicagoans Score Winning Marker on Four Walks Off Tom Brewer in First Frame By the United Press Veteran Don Johnson pitched his second two-hit game of the season yesterday as the Chicago White Sox blanked the Boston Red Sox, 1 to 0, before 3,970 fans, scoring the winning run on four walks in the first inning. The victory gave theWhite Sox a game and a half lead over the league-leading Detroit Tigers in games won and lost, plus a chance to take over first place in percentages if Detroit should lose today. Johnsons pitching show, as he scored his third victory against one defeat, hardly eclipsed the hurling by bis rival, 22-year-old rookie Tom Brewer. Brewer went 6 1-3 innings without giving up a hit and finished with only three singles charged against him. However, he had trouble with his control and walked eight batters, while striking out four. Four Draw Passes Passes to Nellie Fox, Minnie Minoso, Cass Michaels and Carl Sawatski forced in the Chicago run. Thereafter, Johnny Groth beat out a dribbler to the mound for a single and Fox and Jim Rivera singled into right field. Johnson gave up a first-inning single to Charley Maxwell and a second-inning single to Sammy White. Johnsons earlier two-hitter was against Philadelpia on May 2, when Eddie Joost singled and Morry Martin doubled. Yesterday, Johnson struck out five and walked two. It was his second shutout and the fourth of the season for the White Sox, Who now have blanked Boston three times. It was Brewers second defeat against no victories. In his only other start, he lost to Philadelphia, 6 to 4, giving up four runs and seven hits in -3 1-3 innings. Until yesterday, he had hurled only seven innings, working in relief against New York, Cleveland and Chicago.
