Afta Dan Is Home First Under Drive at Beulah Defeats Three Hoops by Neck With Jockey Billy Sackett Up By J. R. BATTY Staff Correspondent BEULAH PARK, Grove City, Ohio, May 12. Ray Petermans Afta Dan was the second long priced winner to get home successfully during the early races on the card here today, paying 7.60 to his scattered backers among the estimated throng of 5,500 which attended the sport under warmer weather conditions than prevailed the first two days here. Afta Dan accounted for the third race by downing H. C. Beattys Three Hoops by a neck. Lu Lu Miss, owned by the combined interests of Fineman and Wilsom, and coupled in the field wagering with two other horses, was third among the dozen which competed at six furlongs. Afta Dan was timed the distance over a slow strip in 1 : 17 and Jockey Billy Sackett handled the reins. The winner, a three-year-old gelded son of Better Hurry After Dinner, did not start last year and had made only two previous appearances under silks. Coming from off the pace in the early running, Afta Dan closed stoutly to overtake Lu Lu Miss midway of the drive and then managed to stave off Three Hoops belated challenge. The second race was captured by the extreme outsider, Robert L. Edens Equimagic, who paid 31.80 at the straight windows and coupled in the Daily Double with Dr. Jay, winner of the first race, was worth 08.80. Claiming races, without exception, make up the card here Thursday, but the program promises to furnish interesting sport. With a dry strip as a prospect- for the first time since the meeting opened Monday, horsemen flocked to secretary Gene Burys entry booths. Limit, fields .of 12 starters exist in five of the eight races. The headliner, posted as the seventh race, attracted the entry of two recent winners. Six others will face this pair at one mile for the purse of ,300. Included among the line-up is Fred W. Hoopers Big Hoop. This prominent Coral Gables, Fla., patrons blue and red silks will be seen by local fans for the first time in the history of Beulah Park. Another winner from the same point in this field is One Way, owned by the partnership of Borgenmenke and Mansce. Both scored when competing at a distance of ground, indicating that they are fit and well suited for the distance required Thursday. Others in the feature are Fair Edna, Moms Choice, Jason, Good Boy, Storm of Gold and Mr. Nellie. The only one of this group to make an appearance under silks at the current session is Good Boy. He tried to go the mile distance over a heavy strip on opening day but finished a distant fourth as a second choice in the wagering. Perhaps he will show an improved effort over a more firm strip. Storm of Gold was a. scheduled starter in the fifth race yesterday but declined the issue. The five-year-old daughter of Stormscud Golden Floe will probably be one of the more heavily supported members of this field. Racing at Sunshine Park early this season, Storm of Gold was consistently j close up and finished four times in the money from nine starts.
