JUDGES STAND CHARL$ HATT0N PIMLTCO, Baltimore, Md May. 12. A 16 hands element of sheer zip was introduced into the seventy-ninth Preakness with the arrival today of Hasty House Farms Hasty Road. Winning or losing, the Derby runner-up is exciting to watch, and his presence seems to assure an entertaining renewal of this second of the "Triple Crown" events. Most of our better three-year-olds this season Correlation, Goyamo, Fisherman and Determine appear to be of the stretch-running persuasion, except that the Derby winner is versatile enough to follow a nippy pace closely. Hasty Roads dashing technique is in refreshing contrast, and the pace a week from Saturday is going to be very realistic far as he goes. Trainer Harry Trotsek is satisfied he will stay a mile and three-sixteenths comfortably enough, and we know of no probable who is capable of making him pull out all the stops in the early phases of the race, with the possible exception of Jet Action. This assumes that the most will be made of his natural advantage, though Johnny Adams has said he was not keen to "send" the Roman colt out of the gate quite so swiftly as he did Derby Day. He was virtually forced to, in order to maintain any sort of position, as those on the "extreme outside angled for the rail. Hasty House could start the blaze-faced bay in Mondays Preakness Prep, to familiarize him with the texture of the Pimlico going. There is also a possibility Correlation will turn up in the entries, however, and one imagines Simmons and Trotsek can restrain their enthusiasm for involving their colts in a hard race before the 00,000 classic. Reasonably probable starters for the Prep, which is a mile and a sixteenth, are Sunny Blue Farms Admiral Porter, Joe Browns Gigantic, Louie Hag-gins Homestake, Mrs. Harry Parrs Staffordshire and Hasty Road Introduces Zip Into Preakness Busher Now Proving Successful Producer Maine Chance String May Race in Chicago Queen Hopeful Adds Interest to Susan Mrs. Ada L. Rices Ring King. To these may be added several from New York, among them Artismo, Black Metal and Goyamo. For Free seems to have raced his way into the Preakness in winning a little race here yesterday afternoon. Trainer Steve Birosak said that it depends upon how he comes-out of that mile and a sixteenth event. AAA It is nice that Jet Action has become a Withers winner and a serious candidate for other three-year-old stakes during the season. His dam, Busher, has ever been a great favorite here, both for her brilliance under colors and her charming individuality. For a time her stud record was discouraging and there were doubts if she would distinguish herself in production as she had in training. Now one may hope that her name will recur in future generations of thoroughbreds, and that she will establish her own branch of the family of La Troienne, one which has been ramifying extensively and beneficially. We are not at liberty to divulge the sum Mrs. Graham paid for Busher, but it was the largest ever for what might be called an untried producer. It is understood the mare, who as a three-year-old in 1945 won Horse of the Year honors, is rather lucky to be here. She experienced difficulties foaling last season somewhat similar to those which resulted so tragically for Twilight Tear, who was, incidentally, the only other of their sex to be voted the seasons champion. Veteran turfmen who saw Bushers races at Washington Park probably always will believe that among race mares her quality is as unique as that of her grandsire, Man o War. Who that saw it will ever forget her breathtaking performance in the Washington Park Handicap, when she carried 115 pounds to the older Armeds 120 and set a track record of 2:01, finishing with such power the Calumet gelding lost all contact with her? Physically, Jet Action is in many respects reminiscent of his dam. They are of the same color and, except that his back is lower, the Maine Chance colt is more her son than Jet Pilots. By the way, it is indicated that Mrs. Grahams string, including also Black Metal and the lively filly, Fascinator, will be active at Arlington and Washington during the summer season. AAA The week-ends Black -Eyed Susan assumed more importance with the arrival here of Allie Reubens consistent, and consistently formidable, little Queen Hopeful. Though there is some question her stablemate Hasty Road much cares for sandy eastern surfaces, she is quite impartial in the matter, winning the Florida Oaks and placing in the Matron and Selima. The extraordinary thing about Queen Hopeful is that she can campaign so vigorously and well, never going unplaced in 21 starts, despite her lack of size. In this way she reminds one of Determine. Harry Trotsek doubts if the Roman filly is above 15 hands, or will tip the beam at more than 900 pounds. Nevertheless, she has far more toughness of fibre than many larger fillies. Also, the Hasty House conditioner-observes, she has tremendous self esteem, and manifests it both in her races and about the stables. Queen Hopeful is never beaten until the wire is reached, and if someone crosses her in her daily routine there is a stormy protest of flashing teeth. Fascinator, who defeaten her in the Continued on Page Thirty-Nine I JUDGES STAND By CHARLES HA1TON Continued from Page Forty-Eight Kentucky Oaks, strikes this observer as a more capable filly. And racing secretary Colwill expects that she will be a starter in the Black-Eyed Susan. If she is, Queen Hopeful may turn the tables on her, for the Hasty House filly has been refreshed since the Downs filly classic, while Fascinator raced in the Acorn at Belmont Park. The cast for the Black-Eyed Susan, and that for the Preakness, may depend in some degree on the plans of -the Royce Martin estate. For Woodvale has the filly Fancy Diver in Saturdays stake, the colt Goyamo in the Preakness. There is some indication here they will till these engagements.
