C, May 12: President Eisenhower said today that the army is perfectly capable of taking care of its security risks. Mr. Eisenhower also told a news conference that it was reprehensible for any army officer to give, out confidential information without authorization. Eisenhower Says Indochina Important WASHINGTON, D. C.,May 12. President Eisenhower said today the free world ought not write off Indochina because.it is very important to the defense of Southeast Asia. ? Eisenhower denied at his news conference that there are any differences in his view and those of Secretary of State John Foster Dulles on the importance of Indochina. Dulles had said yesterday that he believes Southeast Asia could be held without Indochina. Army-McCarthy Hearings Lengthened WASHINGTON, D. C, May 12. The Senate Investigation Subcommittee voted today to lengthen its daily hearings in the Army-McCarthy row, but rejected a proposal to hold night hearings: The decision was reached at a closed-door meeting before the start of todays televised public hearings, at which Army counselor John G. Adams was the witness. Adams took over the witness stand on the 15th day of the hearings from Army Secretary .Robert T. Stevens, who is suffering from a virus infection. FHA Admits Jacked-Up Apartment Rents WASHINGTON, D. C, May 12. Senator Harry F. Byrd.said today the Federal Housing Administration admits tenants living in apartments built through. excessive government-backed loans have .had to pay jacked-up rents. The Virginia Democrat who has investigated alleged federal housing scandals for two years, said the FHA has informed him that rentals in projects built with FHA-insured loans are based on the "estimated replacement cost" rather than actual cost. FOREIGN: Earthquake Levels Six Greek Villages ATHENS, Greece, May 12. An earthquake practically leveled six villages today in the Pygros area in Western Peopon-nesus. First reports said there were "several dead and injured." The tremor shook areas around the cities of Pyrgos, Patras and Tripolis. Around Pygros, the villages of Aspraspitia, Lala, Lemou, Achladiki, Valliliki and Xylokastron were reported nearly leveled. French to Meet With Communists HANOI, Indochina, May 12. The French High Command ordered a French liaison mission today to prepare to fly to Dien Bien Phu for a dramatic meeting with the Communists to arrange the evacuation of 1,300 wounded French and Viet Namese soldiers. The mercy mission will include doctors to look over the wounded, engineers to survey the wrecked airfield where ambulance planes must land and staff officers to work out actual details of the operations with the Reds. Vietnam Demands Halt to Fighting GENEVA, Switzerland, May 12. The anti-Communist government of Vietnam, Indochina, today demanded a halt to the Indochinese fighting under international safeguards, acceptance by the Reds of Emperor Bao Dai as the national leader and eventual free elections under U.N. supervision. French Bombers Strike Reds in Delta HANOI, Indochina, May 12. French, bombers struck at Communist forces infiltrating the Red River "rice bowl" around Hanoi today and French troops strung barbed wire and dug trenches to protect delta cities against the second phase of the Red "victory drive." A French military spokesman described the Communist threat to the delta stepped up since the fall of Dien Bien Phu as "serious but not desperate." Malik Rejects British Spy Charges LONDON, England, May 12. Soviet Ambassador Jacob Malik today rejected British charges that two air attaches at the Russian Embassy here attempted to engage in espionage. Malik called on British Minister of State Selwyn Lloyd at the Foreign Office and told him that the Soviet Union could not accept the British spy charges against Maj. Ivan Pupyshev and Maj. Andrei Gudkov.
