On the Trot By MORRIE KURLANSKY 1 Assured First to Win Four Races Edward Hanoyer Scores Third Time Parkinson Finds Winners Circle MAYWOOD PARK, Maywood, HI., May 12. Assured, chestnut gelding owned by the Shepard Farms, Inc., of Chicago, with leading reinsman, Howard Beissinger, in the sulky, became the first horse at this meeting to win four races when he garnered another front-going victory in the Berwyn Pace, an early-closing event for 30-class pacers on Monday. As in all his previous four starts, the three-year-old son of Victory Ladyship got to the top early, but this time Beissinger held him under restraint to preserve his speed for the last quarter. In his last previous race on May 3, Assured hadset a sizzling pace for the first half 1:02 and was unable to resist Grand Wisconsin, Norway and Peter Van- i gundy in the stretch drive. Only Norway of this trio was in Mondays race, but the son of Kings Counsel had shown tremendous finishing power in all his races here and went to the post an even-money choice, with Assured at 3-to-2 a well-regarded second choice in the field of seven. Harry Bur-right rated Norway far off the pace the first time around and was more than five lengths behind Assured when making his bid and, although closing strongly, could not make up that much ground to seriously threaten Assured. The .supporting feature, The Streator Trot, a 23-class stakes for trotters, went to Edward Hanover, a promising; five-year-old owned by Landas Stable of Chicago and driven by Dee Stover. It was the third victory in four starts here for the Dean Hanover Esther Hanover gelding and it may be safely predicted that before this season is over Edward Hanover will be a contender in the fast-class trotting races on the Chicago circuit ... A remarkable training feat was accomplished by Al Phillips with 11-year-old Trusty Hanover, the property of Joyce Tipton from LaPorte, Ind. Retired as an eight-year-old during the 1951 season with a mark of 2:12 over a half-mile track, Trusty Hanover returned to actual competition Monday and won a CC-class trot at first asking by ZYs lengths in 2:10. The spell is broken, for Bob Parkinson,-that is. It took the Springfield trainer exactly 27 races to find the winners circle and the happy event came to pass in Mondays C-class trot with the four-year-old Palachuck filly, Jenachuck, who made her seasonal bow in this race and acquired a new record of 2:11 in the mile trip. Once started on the winning trail Bob made it a double by annexing Mondays nightcap with Starr Haven, a fleet three-year-old pacer owned by E. L. Garrison of Peoria, against older opponents in 2:09, a new mark for the Eddie Havens sidewheeler. Fifteen of harness racings most distinguished pacers have been named in the Big Pace, one of the leading attractions on the Deleware County Fair program of Grand Circuit harness racing. Nine of the 15 are members of the charmed two-minute circle. The remaining six are likely candidates for such honors before the season is over. Each year the Big Pace has been a highlight. Record for the event was the 2:00 of the late Prince Jay, when this California-owned pacer won the 1951 renewal. The Big Five roster lists such as Poplar Dell, Scottish Chief, Dutch Dandy, Iosolas Ensign, Adio Abe, Brookes Honor, Chief Strong, Florence Knight, Walter McKIyo, High Frisco, Warpath, Voting Trust, H. D. Hanover, Silver Melody and Hi-Los Brother. Herman Graham of Salem, 111., breeder and owner of such good ones as Gene Hayes, Jochovolo, Nancy Woollen and Scarlet Scourgg among others, was a visitor here Monday. He reports that the horses are coming along fine under care of trainer Edgar Leonard, and will be shipped to Hazel Park before long. . . . W. J. Olinger, owner of Miss Abbe Cash and Shooting Abbe, good winners on the Chicago circuit last year, substituted the other night here as a timer, and rehashed past events with Grandma Burright. . . Nathaniel B. Hirschtick, prominent young " La Salle Street attorney who represents many horsemen, is a frequent clubhouse guest. Trainer Elmer Hutchcraft shipped his stable to Louisville for the forthcoming meetings at the Fairgrounds Speedway. . . . Roy McGregor, Florida owner-trainer, left with his trotters, Castle Bomb, Snappy Spencer, Titia Mite and Volo Rep for greener pastures in the East. . . Milwaukees famous mile track, site of many outstanding Grand Circuit races in former years, is lost to the trotters and pacers. The surface was paved for auto racing. However, a half-mile track will be retained for harness horses and will be located in the center-field. . . Chicago-owned Hambletonian candidate, His Victory, with his mile of 2:09 at Maywood Park, April 22, is currently the fastest three-year-old trotter on half-mile tracks. No less than six horses owned by local automobile dealer Paul Wixom are currently credited with the fastest times of the year for age, gait and sex, both on mile and half-mile tracks, namely three-year-old trotter Super Fine 2:09 at Santa Anita ; four-year-old trotter Eastern Shore 2:05 at Santa Anita; three-year-old pacer Hal Gray 2:054 at Santa Anita; four-year-old pacer Gene Jester 2:02 at Santa Anita and 2:04 at Yonk-ers; four-year-old pacer Fred Scott 2:01; at Santa Anita and aged mare Miss Mamie 2:05 at Yonkers.
