Larry Ellis, DeSpirito Up, Wins Handicap Trial Becomes a Top Massachusetts Candidate by Impressive Victory By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 12. The combination of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Lingles Larry Ellis and jockey Tony DeSpirito worked in perfect rhythm here today to register a popular victory in the ,500 Massachusetts Cap Trial. Complet-. ing the nine furlongs in 1:50, under an impost of 115 pounds, the winning son of Easy Mon scored by two lengths over S. Tufanos Wise Margin with Red Head Stables Futuresque taking third, another two and a half lengths back and three parts of a length before his more illustrious stable-mate, Roedna. The majority of the 11,588 crowd installed Larry Ellis as an odds-on choice in the field of seven, receiving .60 for the usual two-dollar investment. The triumph qualified the Lingle ace as one of the most prominent of local candidates for next Wednesdays 0,000-added Massachusetts Handicap. Following the race it was announced he had been assigned 113 for the richer race. It marked the third straight victory iov Larry Ellis and the first in which DeSpirito has ben successful with him this season. In addition to accounting for the feature, DeSpirito showed good riding form in guiding J. J. Shugrues Supercilious to victory in the fifth race and annexing the sixth with Irving J. Whites High Head. Futuresque followed a pattern usually set when a stable sends out an entry in a race! of this sort. Jockey Vernon Smith let the Questionnaire gelding go along at a good pace to attempt to kill off the early challengers and make the job easier for the stretch-running Roedna, but as it turned out, Futuresque had something left in the drive and held on Tenaciously. Wise Margin, a slow beginner in his stake ventures during the past winter season, went along close to the oace today and it appeared that Keith Stuart had a good hold of the colt, suggesting he could have taken command at any stage of the run down the backstretch. Smart Choice joined Wise Margin in racing close behind the leader, but the Sidell colt was unable to keep his position as the final quarter-mile got under way. Passing the furlong pole, Wiss Margin was slightly in front of Futuresque with Larry Ellis charging on them on the extreme outside. Saving all the ground possible, the leading pair held their positions until the final furlong where the Lingle gelding overtook them. From that point to the finish the ultimate wimier.stadily. drew clear with his long, loping strides"
