. . Eight Fast Sprinters Seek Covington Nickey W. Clashes With Dance Nsing Veteran Wagner Horse Had High Speed in First Outing - Of Year at Downs Last Week CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 12. The Covington Purse, a six and one-half furlongs condition race for four-year-olds and upward, will occupy the feature spot on a well-filled program scheduled for Thursday at Churchill Downs. Eight useful sprinters are engaged for the race, which shapes up as a rather wide open event. Under the allowance terms of the Thursday attraction, Harold G. Bockmans Prince Marque, Darrell H. Wells Black Bantam, and Clifford Mooers improved Plenary will each shoulder 116 pounds. Also expected to start are Sam E. Wilson, Jr.s Pick and Play, 112; Buddah Stables Dance Nsing, 114; "Mrs. Louis J. Herrmanns quick mare.-Bloom, 113; Al Wellmans Task Fleet, 109, and Mrs. Leo Wagners hardhitting homebred, Nickey W., 109 pounds. Apprentice to Ride Nickey W. The apprentice allowance was claimed for Nickey W., who will have the saddle services of Jean Chalk. Lois Cook is engaged for Task Fleet, Bobby Permane rides Dance Nsing, and Kenneth Church will be astride Bloom in the Covington. Steve Brooks, leading reinsman at the Downs, is to handle Black Bantam, Layton Risley will pilot Plenary, and Douglas Dodson drew the mount on Pick and Play. Nickey W. and Dance Nsing finished second and third, respectively, behind Screemin Jack in the New Albany Purse last week. Despite his 11 years, Nickey W., who was making his first start of the year, set a brisk pace until inside the stretch before bowing to the Herff gelding and he was a length and one-half on Dance Nsing at the wire for place honors. The Wagner representative may go to the post the Covington choice on the strength of his good New Albany Purse performance. With but three days of the Downs spring meeting remaining, racing secretary-han-dicapper Lincoln Plaut plans some special events for Friday and Saturday. Two allowance races are slated for the closing day card; a 0,000 eight-furlong test for three-year-olds and a ,000 co-feature, which will match four-year-olds and older at seven-eighths of a mile.
