Floridas 1954-55 Racing Season Set by Commission Schedule of 178 Days for Four Tracks Same as Previous Period Tropical Park November 27 to January 15 43 days. A schedule of 178 racing days, the same granted for 1953-54, was approved this week for the next Florida racing season. Meeting in Miami, the Florida State Racing Commission announced that the Florida season again would get under way at Tropical Park on Saturday, November 27, with activity concluding at Gulfstream Park, Friday, April 22, 1955. Sunshine Park, near Tampa on the Gulf Coast side of the state, was allotted a 52-day meeting from January 14 through March 15. Tropical will close its session January 15, while the Gulfstream session will open March 4. The schedule for all four tracks for 1954-55 is exactly the same as last seasons. The announcement of the dates schedule thus far has evoked no public comment from any officials of the three Miami area tracks, which last year were involved in a heated controversy over the allotments and the assignment of "Scholarship Days," when proceds of the tracks operation go to a fund to help support Florida colleges and the University of Miami. As finally settled last season, there will be eight scholarship days during 1954-55, three each at Tropical and Gulfstream, and two at Sunshine Park. The scholarship days in the Miami area will be conducted on the first three days of the Tropical meeting and the last three days of the Gulfstream season. No dates have as yet been announced for Sunshines scholarship days. One of each of the Tropical and Gulf-tream scholarship days will be run in the name of Hialeah Park, since a ruling last year prevented Hialeah from operating charity days directly before, after, or in the middle of its regular meeting.
