Ambler I!. Runs Fourth In Derby Trial Stakes Woodwards American-Bred Colt Decisively Beaten at Lingfield Special to Daily Racing Form LINGFJELD PARK, Sussex, Eng., May 14. William Woodward, Jr.s, American-bred bay colt Ambler H., favorite for the Epsom Derby, was decisively beaten in "the Derby Trial Stakes at 12 furlongs here today. Running over the Derby distance for the first time, Ambler LT., ridden by Harry Carr, finished fourth, beaten 12 lengths by the Yorkshire-trained colt Row-ston Manor, a son of Pearl Diver and Nivea. Rowston Manor, owned by Lincolnshire farmer Frank W. Dennis, was. having his first outing of the year today, and he beat Queen Elizabeths black colt Landau by one , length in a good finish. A 33-to-l outsider, j Roccamare was third, 10 lengths behind the leading pair. Ambler n., who was an even money favorite this afternoon, moved ! up. smoothly approaching the home stretch and appeared full of "run. About two and one-half furlongs from the -wire Landau joined Rowston Manor, who was setting the pace, and the pair continued to fight it out well clear of Ambler n., who seemed unable to produce a finishing burst. Rowston Manor headed Landau a furlong out and held off the strenuous efforts of Sir Gordon Richards on the Royal color-bearer. It was a slowly run race, time for the mile and one-half being 2:45, which is about- five seconds more than the average for the event. The victor was second choice at 5-to-2 and Landau was held at 5-to-l. Jockey Harry Carr, looking disconsolate after the. eclipse of the Woodward racer, said, "The only excuse I can find; for Ambler is that the track was rather sloppy on top and the colt had some difficulty in keeping his footing in some parts of the race. He was well enough placed shortly after entering the straightaway, but didnt run on,"
