Jamaica Wagering Shows 3 Pet. Gain ,359,326 00117 Average Handle Increase Due to Addition Of Ninth Race to Cards; Attendance Shows Decline By Staff Correspondent The Jamaica meeting of 40 days, which inaugurated the New York season on March 25, earliest in the history of the sport in the Empire State showed an increase of 9,989 or 3 per cent in daily average mutuel handle, while attendance was down 8 per cent or 2,186 per day. Statistics compiled by Daily Racing Form reveal a per diem mutuel handle of ,-359,326 and attendance of 23,993 as compared with respective figures of ,299,337 and 26,179 for the corresponding meeting of 38 days in 1958 which ran from March 28 through May 10. The increase in wagering was due to the nine-race programs that were conducted throughout the session, whereas last season only eight races were presented daily. As a result of the additional race, per capita daily betting this year was 8.33 as compared to 7.83 in 1958, an increase of 12 per cent. During the 40 days 360 races were staged, whereas at the 38-day spring meeting in 1958 the total was 304. The drop in attendance can be attributed to the inclement weather that prevailed during the early part of the season. Twelve of the programs were conducted on tracks other than fast but there were several days when, although the track, was fast, the weather was cold and raw and hardly conducive to racegoing. There were six ,000,000 days during the meeting, the handle going above that figure on all Saturdays with the exception of the Saturday of opening week, which was Holy Saturday and the closing day of the Lenten season. Wood Memorial Highlight Wood Memorial Day, April 18, was the highlight of the season, with 40,063 fans • wagering ,945,872 on the nine races. He won the Wood Memorial, worth a net of 5,915, and two other races and in addition was third in the Jamaica Handicap. The handicap star, Vertex, owned by Joseph J. Brunetti and Frank A. Piarulli, was second in the standings with 4,887, winners share of the Grey Lag Handicap in which he carried 130 pounds and triumphed by almost a length. Brookmeade Stables Big Effort, who accounted for the Bed o Roses Handicap and one other race, was third with 1,907. There were two horses with two stake victories apiece at the meeting. Elkcam Stable and Lou Cheslers Atoll, who won the Swift and the Gotham, gleaned 3,995 at the session, while Brookfield Farms Isendu, in accounting for the Inquisitor and Paumonok, took down 7,422 in purses. The Dolce stable led the owners at the meeting in money won wth a total of 1,-890. In addition to Manassa Maulers three wins and a third, the stable, which is trained by Frank Martin, won five other races, had six seconds and nine other thirds. Although the Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs stable was without a stake winner at the meeting, it took down 7,755 in purses to give it second place on the owners list. A total of 15 wins, 17 seconds and 10 thirds were posted by the Jacobs establishment during the 40 days. The Brunetti and Piarulli combine, by reason of, Vertex Grey Lag score, was third with 4,887, while Harry Isaacs Brookfield Farm ranked fourth with 2,437. Shoemaker had "six-for-eight" on April 4 for the outstanding jockey performance of the season to date. Robert Ussery was third in the riders i " standings with 34 winners, while Manuel Ycaza, with 32, finished fourth. Hirsch Jacobs had things pretty much his own way in the trainers race, saddling 28 winners, twice as many as his closet competitior, Edward A. Neloy. Edwin Hol-ton was two behind Neloy, with 12 saddling successes. This was a repeat performance for Jacobs as he also headed the list last spring with 25 victories.
