. 4_ Six Match Strides At Garden State V. S. O. P., Mariners Guide, Pen Hallow Accorded Best Chance for Victory Today By BOB McCURLEY Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATS PARK, Camden, N. J., May 13. — A small field of six well matched middle distance runners will contest the featured Delaware County Purse here Thursday afternoon at 1 1-16 miles. The competition will come from a sextet composed of Mrs. Milton Erlangers V. S. O. P., 112; Jeff -Lin Stables Mariners Guide, 114; Frank Solimenas Pen Hallow, 112; C. B. Fischbachs Federal Judge, C. H. Howes Crispi and William G. Helis Jr.s Irish Whistler, all under 110 pounds. V. S. O. P. was the latest of the group to reach the winners circle, turning back a field of 0,000 platers here earlier in the meeting. The English impost is by Tudor Minstrel, sire of Fred Turner Jr.s Tomy Lee, hero of the recent Kentucky Derby. Fifth in Donn Handicap Mariners Guide, who is the highweight of the field under the conditions, was fifth behind Nickel Boy in his local debut. His * best race of the season was a fifth to Cain Hoy Stables One-Eyed King in the inaugural running of the Donn Turf Handicap at Gulfstream Park. j Pen Hallow has been a consistent sort since being acquired by his present owner last year at Atlantic City via the claiming route. He has run exclusively in high price claiming and allowance class races since then. His last start saw him run fourth behind Nickel Boy here. Federal Judge may be the best of the lot although he has failed to post a victory in 26 starts covering a span of almost a year and a half. In his latest start he was last behind Victory Stables Sonny Dan *and Fairlawn Farms Sharpsburg. However, he was beaten only slightly more than five . lengths for all the money. Irish Whistler has started only three , times this season after being on the shelf . all of 1958 with injuries. However, he was a good winner over allowance class company in 1957. Grispi has failed -to disturb anyone in his local efforts, finishing last in ,000 company in his most recent outing.
