Golden East Takes Belmont Honors i Skips Six Furlongs In Record l:092/5 Favored Besomer Unseats Woodhouse at Start, Then Impedes Horses During Race By BOB HORWOOD BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 13. — Colin MacLeod Jr.s Besomer, the favorite in the featured Twenty Grand* Purse, stumbled at the start and spilled jockey Hedley Woodhouse, then raced with the field, bothering both Edwin Jay Goulds Golden East and Peter A. B. Widener m.s Mince Pie as he charged between them in the stretch. That did not prevent Golden East from setting a 6 furlongs track record of 1:09% as he led Mince Pie by a little more than a length. Wheat-ley Stables Mince Pie was a length and a hal fback in third place and the same margin before Merrick Stables Wing Jet. Dave Erb rode Golden East, who paid .40 as second choice with the rainy day throng of 17,192. The track for the feature race was made faster than it had been by a fairly constant light .rain, while a brisk north east by east wind blew the horses down the backstretch and around the far turn. The fractions were :22% and :45, both belonging to Golden East. Golden East is a six-year-old gelded son of Pavot — The Golden Girl, by Hyperion, who is trained by Arthur White. Literally Falls Out of Gate Golden East shot to the front at the start of the Twenty Grand as Besomer literally fell out of the gate, sending Wood-house over his rear. In a few strides, the riderless Besomer was racing close to the leaders. At the end of the opening quarter Golden East led Misty Flight by a half length with Mince Pie three lengths farther back and daylight before Handshake. Snow Fight, Wing Jet, Romopolis and Writer brought up the rear. Golden East continued to lead Misty Flight around the "turns, while Besomer managed to impede the latter* and Mince Pie-moved into second place. In the stretch Mince Pie moved to Golden East, but Besomer forced his way between the two leaders, knocking Mince Pie off stride and not helping Golden East to much. The riderless horse drew out in the final yards when Golden East went on -to score decisively Mince Pie recovered well, but was unable to regain the ground lost when Besomer bumped "him, while Wing Jet closed fairly well. . The Mike Smithwick-trained entry of Theodora A. Randolphs Walrus and Mrs Ogden Phipps Punctuality monopolized the steeplechase. Punctuality set the pace for most of the about 2 1-16 miles, but bobbled badly at the clubhouse fence, while Walrus came on under a well-judged ride by James Murphy to score by a length. Punctuality led John M. Schiffs Due de Richmond who also made a couple of mistakes, by 10 lengths, while Mrs. Anson A. Bigelows Rotal was a half length out of the money. Allan Adale fell at an early fence and unseated apprentice James Wyatt, who was taken to Physicians Hospital, Jackson Heights, with a possible fractured collarbone. Walrus paid .50. Mrs. John R. H. Thourons Royal Daz-zler, who came to the races preceded by a reputation that sent_him postward at odds-on, turned back a field of nine maiden three-year-olds in the sixth race at one mile. With Hedley Woodhouse keeping him under a steady drive, Royal Dazzler put away Mrs. Fred W. Hoopers pacemaking Alhambra Circle leaving the half-mile pole then stood off the closing rush of Mrs. Jan Burkes Easy Prey to score by a length and one-half. John S. Kroeses North Pole n finished fairly well to be a length farther back and seven lengths before Mrs. George D. Wideners Ours. Royal Dazzler paid .70 and was teletimed in 1:37% over a fast track that may have been helped by intermittent light rain.
