Near Record Crowd Views Jet Comets Thistle Score Ward Gets Huntley Runner Home Nearly Length Before Show Man By PAT CAUDILL THISTLEDOWN, North Randall, Ohio, May 30. A near record-breaking crowd, estimated at more than 16,000, jammed this plant today and betting on the early events was far exceeding last years Memorial Day handle. For the third consecutive day of the meeting- which began on Tuesday, the weather was ideal, the race oval was at its best and a well balanced program was presented. Todays nine-race card saw some good finishes come in the earlier events and taking top honors in the Euclid Purse, a five and one-half furlongs allowance drawing seven crack three-year-olds was W. L. Huntleys Jet Comet, a good looking son of Jet Pilot French whp got up in the "final stages to beat out Thomas Piatts Show Man by three-quarters of a length. Gaining the show position, four lengths farther back was G. R. Whites Challa Pocket. Ward his second, consecutive victory of the afternoon. Ward had won the fifth race, a claiming affair at five and one-half furlongs, aboard J. Mabrys Ultra Priam who was slightly overlooked in the wagering and paid 3.60. A return of 01,00 came for those who coupled W. W. Lowes Kum-On-In, winner of the first race, and Virgili and McCords Nile Prince, who accounted for the second event, in that form of wagering. Kum-On-In, hard ridden by Donald Brumfield, held a length and one-quarter margin at the end of the six furlongs over R. A. Con-nells Barneys Joy, and paid .80 to win as the favorite of the claiming affair. Tiring badly through the stretch but lasting to save the show position, finishing a neck back of Barneys Joy was the Bar-Bob Stables Pielettaway. For the first time of the meeting, Fridays card will offer but eight races and the featured event, the seventh, has been named the Barry Mercury Purse. The headlirier is for platers entered for claiming prices of ,000 and will be decided at the distance of one-mile and one-eighth. Eight four-year-olds or older are slated to contest for the ,600 purse. H. W. Kellehers Jetair, a seven-year-old gelded son of Jet Pilot Altair, carries top weight of 120 pounds in the main offering. He will be ridden by Owen Headley, who led the jockeys at the recent Ascot Park meeting. A winner at Ascot, Jetair is very likely to be the post-time favorite off his good recent form.
