AMERICAN DERBY OUTLOOK Field Depends Upon Starting of Whichone and Gallant Fox IViUiout Them Twenty 3Iay Go to Post JJIg Shipment of Crack Uaccrs UaccrsProm Prom Churchill Downs The probable field for the American Derby j to be decided Saturday June 14 at Washing I ton Park will not be determined until after the running on June 7 of the Belmont Stakes I At this time it appears as if that fixture will be a twohorse race between Whichone and Gallant Fox Other threeyearolds un ¬ doubtedly will start in the Belmont Stakes but Whichone and Gallant Fox appear stand ¬ outs outsIf If the Bslmont Stakes develops into a duel between the above mentioned pair and the finish is close enough to leave a doubt as to the better horse then Whichone and Gal ¬ lant Fox may meet in the American Derby Should they start the field as a conse ¬ quence would be greatly reduced in size Should neither come to Chicago for the race probably there would be twenty in the field of starters That would supply keen com ¬ petition between no less than a half dozen It would prove an open affair with no out ¬ standing lavorite unless it should be Gal ¬ lant Knight runnerup to Gallant Fox in the Kentucky Derby It is understood on good authority that Gallant Knight may not be started in the Cleveland Derby but be re ¬ served for the American Derby DerbyGallant Gallant Knight is a horse that has thrived and improved during a vigorous campaign of training and racing He is held highly by his connections as well as by persons familiar with the sport who have watched his every move since he went into training last March MarchrillXCE rillXCE ATHELI CS CHANCES Prince Atheling is a colt that deserves consideration regardless of the other start ¬ ers in the American Derby He is fast as shown in his wonderful race at Washington I Park when he overcame interference to de I feat the swift filly Supreme Sweet at J seveneighths of a mile in 124 within one fifth of a second of the track record In j this race Prince Atheling under 110 pounds was eight lengths out of it turning into the stretch Thereafter he gainsd steadily finishing the last eighth of a mile in 12 Prince Atheling in the American Derby will carry 118 pounds eight pounds less than will be carried by Gallant Fox or Whichone That will mean something going a mile and a quarter Whichone and Gal ¬ lant Fox will carry the top weight under the conditions of the race Gallant Knight will carry 121 pounds Bezonian on account of being a maiden will get in with 114 pounds The conditions of the American Derby are that all colts and geldings must carry 12G pounds fillies 121 pounds but the allowances are that nonwinners of a 3yearold race of the value of 20000 are allowed five pounds nonwinners of a 3yearold race of 5000 are allowed eight pounds maidens twelve pounds It will cost 500 additional to start startADDITIONAL ADDITIONAL MATERIAL All of the best horses campaigned at Churchill Downs will arrive Sunday and Monday at Washington Park Illinois horses numbering S50 are already quartered at Washington Park and Lincoln Fields There will come from the Downs in the final ship ¬ ment the remainder of the Greentree Stable in charge of Edward Haughton the Warm Stable in which Victorian is the star in charge of J T Taylor A Jack Baker who will have the formidable band of the New York turfman R S Clark and E F Prichards chestnut colt Tannery an Ameri ¬ can Derby candidate Walter Taylor will bring Hal Price Headleys strong band D E Stewart with the main division of the J N Camden stable J F Schorr in charge of the E B McLean horses Several of the McLean band are now at the track in ¬ cluding Toro and Jock JockRoscoe Roscoe Goose is coming with the horses of Laffoon Yeiser and the Braedelbane Stable J M Goode with the horses of Rogers Caldwell of Nashville former jockey Wil ¬ liam Crump with the racers of J W Par ¬ rish John B Partridge with the remainder of the Valley Lake Stable J J Flannigan with the stable of Mrs E L Swikard of Chicago the horses owned by Griffin Wat kins of Alton 111 trained by C E Durnell Watkins has the crack juvenile Insco by Sir Gallahad III sire of Gallant Fox In ¬ sco cost 23000 at the yearling sales at Saratoga
