AlcibiadesTurf Queen H P Headleys Great Filly Captures Kentucky Oaks Closing Day Attraction at atChurchill Churchill Downs LOUISVILLE Ky May 31 Alcibiades Hal Price Headleys good homebred daughter of Supremus and Regal Roman which was seen in front during the first fiveeighths of the Kentucky Derby scored with a notable triumph on the occasion of her first start since that race when she accounted for the fiftysixth renewal of the Kentucky Oaks fer threeyearold fillies the stake feature of todays final program of the spring meeting at Churchill Downs J W Parrishs Rich Widow and R S Clark s Galaday which shared favoritism of one of the largest closing day throngs in the history of the track fin ¬ ished second and third as named namedNext Next in the field of seven representing the outstanding westerners of mentioned age and sex came J N Camdens Honey Locust a matter of two heads separating her from second place Thistle Ann Elizabeth Ken ¬ nedy and Niato completed the array and while the former pair were close in the wake of Honey Locust Niato trailed some six lengths back of Elizabeth Kennedy KennedyBut But for about a quarter of a mile between the half mile ground and eighth post the winner showed the way and rounning the distance in 152 over the fast track she gained her important conquest by a length R Finnerty had the mount on the winner which Walter Taylor prepared for the race and excepting only Thistle Ann which carried 121 pounds the imposts were 116 pounds Galaday poundsGaladay alone succeeded in getting in front of the Headley star and entering the stretch with an advantage of a length appeared in a fair way to race on to victory The late racing however proved more exacting for the Clark filly with the result that Alcibi ¬ ades was again in the lead nearing the clos ¬ ing eighth and held sway with marked courage thereafter As Finnerty drove the winner to the utmost Rich Widow which steadily improved her position through the closing threeeighths just managed to wear down Galaday and the latter finishing on the inside had but little over Honey Locust in placeAt lasting for third place At the approach of the second turn Alcibi ¬ ades bore out badly and while Galaday at the time was forcing the formers pace the winners brief display of temper might have prevented her from leading throughout As she started wide on the turn Finnerty eased her up with the result that Galaday racing on the outside and thus forced to lose some ground went to the front When straightened out in the stretch Alcibiades gamely set ¬ tled into the task of regaining the lead and this accomplished raced on triumphantly triumphantlyThe The race had a net winning value of 9760 and a silver trophy while second money amounted to 2000 and 1000 to third Honey Locust saved entrance and starting fees feesIdeal Ideal weather favored for the meetings end and the large crowd reflected the interest in the sport right to the end of the successful reaching the stretch and drawing away won easily as Gunfire remained firmly entrenched in second place Ledford and Moira were the chief sufferers at the start and con ¬ sequently were badly outpaced throughout throughoutEstin Estin from the Harned Bros Stable scored easily over six and a half furlongs in the second race Marys Toy blocked repeatedly during the first half mile and taken to the extreme outside on the stretch turn finished with good speed when clear and was wearing the winner down My Hobby indulged with most of the pacemaking was a tiring third followed by Scotland which lost considerable ground The victory was the winners sixth in ten starts this year and Herb Fisher had the mount mountOld Old Gaily proved a repeater for J Graham Browns Brown Hotel Stable when he scored over Myth Duelist and five others of the medium grade platers suited by a distance of one mile and a sixteenth in the third race M Rose who was having his first mount of the meeting brought the winner from last place in the field of eight and heading Myth he pulled away to win by a length as Duelist raced into third place almost two lengths back of Myth Cuddle on the strength of her previous good showing commanded much respect here but failed badly badlyFiddler Fiddler added another purse to the earnings of the Gallaher Combs stable when he cantered home the most decisive winner of the afternoon in the fourth race Sis Agnes raced to second place and third fell to Fair Rosalind RosalindFisher Fisher riding his second winner had the successful son of Wildair in the lead after the first threesixteenths and he came away in the stretch to win by five lengths as Sis Agnes outstayed Fair Rosalind by a length Four times second in previous races this year the winner ran fast in turning in his first triumph of the year the official timer catching him in 1 24 Agitator strong sec ¬ ond choice to the victor came through with his first dull race in a long time and after racing prominently to the turn quickly dropped out of contention and followed far back thereafter
