CHAMPION VICTORIOUS Whitney Star Overcomes Inter ¬ ference to Score Easily Increases Earnings by 26150 26150Through Through Success Corinthian CorinthianSteeplechase Steeplechase to Darkness NEW YORK N T May 31 Whichone Harry Payne Whitneys magnificent son of Chicle and Flying Witch and champion juvenile of last year was an easy winner of the Withers Stakes over one mile at Belmont Park today It was his first big engagement of the year and after being in difficulty in the early stages he came magnificently in the stretch to win with ease and by four lengths The old fixture had a value of 2G150 to the winner and the cham ¬ pion was ridden by Sonny Workman Walter J Salmons Swinfield was the one to race to second place and Frank E Browns Starpatic finished at his heels to beat the W R Coe pair Maya and Black Majesty while the only other starter was Mrs Graham Fair Vanderbilts Sarazen II badly beaten off offThis This was the big attraction of a big day of racing and the performance of Whichone takes him up to the Belmont Stakes to be run next Saturday In that race he will meet William Woodwards Gallant Fox winner of both the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby and it is a gallop of one mile and a half After romping to his Withers victory Workman worked Whichone out the one mile and a quarter which was covered in 2OG 2OGThe The secondary feature of the day was the Corinthian Steeplechase Handicap in which the Thomas Hitchcock silks were victorious when G H Bostwick the accomplished amateur rider brought Darkness home the winner winnerLARGEST LARGEST SATURDAY CROWD CROWDThe The crowd was not up to the proportions of the Memorial Day throng but it was a reater one than has graced any Saturday of the season There was still an uncom ¬ fortable chill in the air and a high wind blew over the course making wraps neces ¬ sary while it militated against fast time The track had dried out nicely over night but it was still a bit off and could not be rated as fast though the footing was safe and firm firmThere There was a short delay at the post and as the barrier went up Workman left whip ¬ ping when Whichone was just a trifle slug ¬ gish He was driven for the reason he had the inside position and there was a peril of his being shut off unless he obtained a position Maya began in front and Black Majesty his stablemate was right with him and Swinfield was showing the way to Sara ¬ zen II Starpatic being the only one that Whichone beat away from the barrier barrierInzelone Inzelone set the pace with Black Majesty and Sande had Maya further out on the course while Whichone was bottled up by the stablemates until for a moment it seemed that he would surely run into serious trouble Workman had to hold his position until rounding the turn when Whichone gradu ¬ ally showed in front of Maya but Black Majesty was out two lengths in front and galloping strongly stronglyBY BY A WIDE 3IARG1X 3IARG1XBlack Black Majesty was still showing the way as he swung into the stretch but by this time Whichone had racing room and he soon went to the son of Black Toney Then he was on by and Workman was looking back to the winner by four lengths as has been told toldIn In the meantime Swinfield which had avoided the early pace was closing in reso ¬ lute fashion on the outside Black Majesty was utterly used up by his pacemaking and he was easily put away Then Starpatic which had also avoided pace closed with the rush that saw him third and Maya also raced over the pacemaker pacemakerAfter After the finish Whichone galloped out to the mile and a quarter in 2 06 in easy lashion and he came out of the race in no way distressed In addition to having scored in a famous old Withers which had its first running in 1871 he had also had a race that should work a great good in completing liis training for his Belmont Stakes engage ¬ ment mentTheie Theie were different opinions of the show Continued on IwcnlyfourtU pngc CHAMPION VICTORIOUS Continued from first page ing of the great colt and the champions of Gallant Fox were not disturbed That should make for a wonderful race when the two colts come together for the gruelling race raceThe The Corinthian Steeplechase Handicap saw the Thomas Hitchcock silks repeat a victory of last year when G H Bostwick brought Darkness home the winner Last year Ban ¬ gle was the winner and he was ridden by A C Bostwick an elder brother of the amateur rider This race had a net value of 3350 to the winner It was Moholi carry ¬ ing the silks of the Flying Horse Farm Stable that raced to second place with Malvoi sine of the Eastland Farms Stable beating the Greentrce Stables Valorous for third Stalker an added starter from the Dor wood Stable was fifth and William F Hitts Crumpler the only other starter un ¬ seated Ball at the second jump This same Crumpler as he raced riderless with the others was almost a constant menace to the other horses and he was in the thick of it right to the last jump jumpMr Mr Bostwick skillfully rated Darkness along and gradually making up ground had enough left in the short run from the last jump to the finish to beat Molholi by two lengths while the English gelding was three lengths before Malvoisine At the start Jeffcott on Molholi took something the worst of it when he was many lengths back of the others but he made up ground with little effort and when the front field was reached the handicap at the start was of no consequence consequenceEdward Edward R Bradleys Baba Kenney a good looking daughter of Black Servant and Betty Ball starting for the first time was an easy winner of the third race This was a four and a half furlongs race through the Widener course for maiden juvenile fillies and twentyfour went to the post postThe The Bradley filly beginning well was at once rushed into command and there was no time she was really threatened She ran straight and true and at the end was three lengths clear with plenty in reserve W R Coes Friaress was the ono to take second place and was a length anil a half before Gifford and Gochrans High Spado while Chicsu was fourth fourthThe The opening race was for platers and it brought victory to G A Coburns Sanford when he led home Mrs B Starrs Lemonade with Dim Ray from the California Stable saving third from Angry Lass It was a good start and early in the race Mordrom went out to set the pace and Roseomar was right with him while Lemonade was not far back Sanford was being placed further back and it was a wise move for in the back stretch the horses were running into the teeth o a high wind windThere There was no material change in running positions until near the stretch turn There Lemonade gained rapidly on both Roseomar and Mordom while Coltiletti made his first move on Sanford Lemonade had Roseomar beaten shortly after turning into the stretch while Mordrom also had enough and was dropping back rather badly A furlong out Sanford drew up on Lemonade and it was a twohorse race for the remainder of the jour ¬ ney Old Sanford steadily wore the four yearold down until he was past the line winner by half a length Dim Ray had staged something of a rush right at the end but he was three lengths back of Lemonade
