CLOSE RACE TO VENEZUELA Gotham and DarFur Strenuously Contest Ohio Feature L Mnngans Business Scores for riarcrs of ofTnvorltc Tnvorltc in Thistle Down Third 2fot Guilty Wins Second CLEVELAND Ohio May 31 In the ab ¬ sence of an outstanding feature interest centered in the runnfng of the fifth event which attracted the best field at Thistle Down Park this afternoon The winner turned up in J M Reeds Venezuela which scored over Gotham by a narrow margin after a hard stretch drive It was only after a strenuous contest also that Gotham secured the second honors from DarFur after the latter had closed a wide gap Bucky Harris and NaniHawaii both well fancied tired after showing early speed speedAfter After having taken the lead rounding the far turn in the fourth event Samuel Ross Bright Flash drew away into a commanding lead during the stretch run to win with much to spare In the final test for the second honors Night Cry had the most in reserve and outstayed Brushing The latter pair raced prominently at all stages the placed trio dominating the running throughout throughoutFor For the first time during the meeting the racing was staged under favorable conditions The weather was ideal the track at its best and the half holiday crowd swelled the atten ¬ dance almost as large as the Decoration Day holiday throng of yesterday which numbered 10000 That Thistle Down Park has lost none of its popularity with the racing fra ¬ ternity despite the absence of activity here in recent years is now assured assuredMrs Mrs Li Gibsons Gibbys Lillian accounted for the opening race in which she scored with ease after coming from behind the lead ¬ ers entering the stretch A more interesting struggle resulted for second honors in which Lady Sweet and Officer came fast in the final furlong racing closely lapped Lady Sweet earned the purse in a drive Belbane the early leader tired when the final drive came cameFinishing Finishing with a brilliant rush next to the inner rail in the final furlong Not Guilty just got up to snatch the verdict from Golden Tinted in the final strides of the second race It was a thrilling finish the first four horses to finish being almost in perfect alignment Golden Tinted after contesting the early leadership closely with Idealia held on gamely during the final drive as did Wentz Paddy Flaherty finished fast in fourth place placeOne One Cent showed the way in the third race to the stretch head where Business chal ¬ lenged The latter continued in game fashion and drew into a clear lead during the last seventy yards One Cent the pacemaker withstood a bold challenge from Shorty dur ¬ ing the final furlong and eventually annexed second honors rather handily Shorty hung after closing much ground and reaching a contending position midway of the stretch
