BIG CROWD SEES MARINE WIN Man o War Colt Defeats Salmons Black Diamond by Length llontnnnro Finishes Third in II J Mackenzie MackenzieMemorial Memorial Hand leap Star Crest CrestCanters Canters in Fourth Itacc TORONTO Ont May 31 An attendance reaching recordbreaking proportions was on hand at Thorncliffe Park to take advantage of the good weather and excellent racing this afternoon Seldom if ever has the spacious course been so taxed taxedInteresting Interesting and bitterly fought finishes were the order of the day in most of the races The feature offering was the R J Mackenzie Memorial Handicap carrying an added value of 5000 It fell to the lot of the Mount Royal Stables good Man o War colt Marine to take down the major portion of the purse which amounted to 3340 3340At At the finish Marine had a length lead over W J Salmons Black Diamond which was easily best of the others H C Hatch sup ¬ plied the one to take third in Montanaro which was two and a half lengths behind Black Diamond and two lengths in advance of Wellet The field was completed by Sir Harry and Babble BabbleA A dash of threequarters which attracted a full field of twelve platers was the initial offering and it resulted in a thrilling finish when Bagpiper got up in the very last stride to get a nose decision from Disapproved A length behind the first pair came Mad Mul ¬ lah Bagpiper and Disapproved staged a bitter duel through the stretch which was decided only at the wire wireCONTEMPLATE CONTEMPLATE BY 3TECK 3TECKAnother Another close finish resulted in the race that was offered as the third when Contem ¬ plate managed to retain a neck advantage over Charley J S while Supawna took third a length and a half farther back backSupawna Supawna was first to show and retained his advantage on the back stretch with Tew senlda supplying the contention and Con ¬ template improving his position On the turn Contemplate forged into a short lead but Supawna was still clinging to the flank of the Hatch representative The pair raced as one down the stretch and Contemplate was unable to draw away from Supawna until a few yards out Charley J S loomed up at this point and forced the leader to his utmost to withstand his challenge challengeStarter Starter Cassidy had his own troubles with the band of eight juveniles that paraded to the post for the second race Most of the delay was caused by the unruly behavior of Justiciary When the field was finally sent away Elcidio and Imaginary were both prac ¬ tically left and their chances were ruined Footmark coupled with Elcidio as the Elm Tree Stable entry and a neglected factor in the wagering was able to get a neck de ¬ cision over Justiciary while Bubbling Out raced into third place placeFootmark Footmark was away fast from the barrier and was hustled along in the lead with Dancing Mack supplying the contention In the stretch Bubbling Out was sent after the leader and succeeded in wresting command from Footmark but the Mount Royal Stables representative was unable to hold his advan ¬ tage and Footmark came again Justiciary had made up much ground and came fast to force the winner to her utmost while Bub ¬ bling Out was just able to retain third from Imaginary ImaginaryBATTLE BATTLE TO THE FINISH FINISHThe The Annesley Purse for Canadianbreds was next in importance to the feature on the days card and it resulted in an easy victory for the Hastings Stables Star Crest which won in a canter leading home the eagram Stables Killing by fifteen lengths after mak ¬ ing a runaway affair of the race for the one mile and a sixteenth J C Fletchers Lind ¬ say was third three and a half lengths in the wake of Killing KillingAt At no stage of the race was the result in doubt Star Crest immediately rushed into a sixlength lead at the quarter post Riley took hold of the gelding at this point and despite the strong pull that he exerted his mount continued to increase the distance be ¬ tween himself and the others Killing raced in closest pursuit nearly all the way and while she was easily best of the others it was an impossible task to get near the win ¬ ner Lindsay finished fast and passed Master Bobbie in the stretch while Tipsy raced in last place all the way
