GRANVILLE MAY BE SENT WEST FOR DETROIT DERBY L g Belmont Stakes Winner Now Logical Leader of Three-Year-Olds Meeting of Belair Stud Star and Rushaway Would Greatly Enhance Interest in Saturdays 5,000 Race at Motor Metropolis of Country DETROIT, Mich., June 9. Pending the arrival of the other eastern invaders and the outcome of the Derby Trial Handicap this afternoon, there was a lull in the preparations for the second renewal of the 5,000 added Detroit Derby, to be run here Saturday. With the exception of Bright Plumage, which won the Derby Consolation Stakes at Tropical Park, it is not known what other eastern-owned stars will be sent here. The management hopes that trainer James Fitzsimmons will decide to send Granville, for with him the race probably will settle, for the present, tne three-year-old championship. With Bold Venture out of training and Brevity soundly beaten in all three of his engagements, Granville appears to be the leader, unless Rushaway or Bright Plumage should defeat him in Saturdays fixture. Dnieper appears to be the crack second horse of the year. He finished second to Brevity in the Florida Derby, to Bright Plumage in the Derby Consolation Stakes and to Rushaway in the Illinois Derby. However, in the latter engagement, he was disqualified for a foul. Rushaway, unfortunately, was not eligible for the Kentucky Derby or Preakness Stakes and had to be content with late closing races to pile up his brilliant record. BARGAIN PURCHASE. Purchased during the winter from Joseph E. Widener, Rushaway won at his first asking under the colors of A. G. Tarn, his new owner. He was shipped to New Orleans for the Louisiana Derby and before establishing a new record in winning that race he was an easy winner of an allowance affair. From there he was shipped to Texas, but The Fighter proved to be a better horse in the Texas Derby and later he was disqualified after finishing third to Marynell and Salaam in the Centennial Exposition Handicap. The son of Haste was next under colors in the Illinois Derby and after winning that race on Friday he was shipped to Latonia that night and the following afternoon won that important fixture. Arriving here several days afterwards, he was given a short rest and then returned to training last week. Bright Plumage has done little campaigning this year, although he started during midwinter. Out of a half dozen starts he won two races and was third on another occasion. DNIEPER A PUZZLE. Dnieper is of uncertain quality. Danny Stewart, who has trained many great ones, including Rose of Sharon, Lady Broadcast and others, believes he is a good horse. Dnieper demonstrated in his work over the local course Sunday that he likes the track. He will be favored in the weights, being called upon to carry 116 pounds to Rush-aways 124. However, all of the others will carry the same impost. Besides Rushaway and Dnieper, the local eligibles did not command much attention. Grand Slam is a doubtful starter. The horse has done little since his disappointing effort in the Preakness and trainer Potts does not believe he likes the local strip. Robert Smith, trainer of the Brookmeade Stable, wired today that he would not have a starter in the race. Mrs. Sloane named Neap, Delphinium and Corundum and it was believed after Corundums bang-up fourth to Hollyrood that Smith would send him westward. According to the management, the demand for reserve seats and boxes far surpasses that of last year and in the event of good weather, a crowd greater than that of Memorial Day, when 28,000 attended, is expected to be on hand.
