The swelling refuses to abate hurriedly and an X-ray is taken, but regardless of what it shows, the son of Chance Shot or Sickle and Ormonda probably will do no more racing as a three-year-old, so Coyne must be convinced Brevitys injury is quite serious and a proper reason for the colts failure to fight it out with Granville and Mr. Bones for victory in the Belmont Stakes. Wayne Wright believes Brevitys injury occurred somewhere in the second- turn when the colt was called upon for his run. Up to that time or during the first mile, the J. E. Widener three-year-old had been going along smoothly in an excellent position. Granville was behind Brevity and Wright was watching for him. As the field swept around the turn, Granville came up on the inside and Brevity moved with him. Just as they reached the turn into the stretch, Granville shot past Brevity and the latter shortened stride to finish unplaced. His injury could have caused that. Brevitys defection removes another prominent three-year-old colt from the picture, Bold Venture being the first to go out and White Cockade the second. The Kentucky Derby and Prcakness winner is through until next year but there is a chance White Cockade will be brought back although James Fitzsimmons, trainer of Ogden Phipps colt, doesnt know when. Nothing can be done with the Withers winner at the present time but if the son of Diavolp can stand training within a few weeks, he will be pointed for the Arlington Classic. Otherwise the prospect for another thrilling race by the topnotch three-year-olds centers around Granville and Mr. Bones and whatever may be developed in the West The principals of the Belmont Stakes duel probably will get together again in the Dwyer Stakes, to be run over the mile and one furlong course at Aqueduct June 20, and then theyll take on the western stars in the Classic on July 25. Roman Soldiers fine performance in carrying 132 pounds to victory in the Granite State Handicap Saturday has won him the admiration of all New England racing enthusiasts and when he goes to the post this week-end in the 0,000 added Rockingham Handicap he will carry the hopes of a very large following, regardless of whether Discovery is among his opponents. Alfred Van-derbilfs flashy chestnut has been placed at the top of the Rockingham weights with 136 pounds, three more than was assigned the four-year-old son of Cohort and Miamba, and a meeting between the two horses will Continued on tice7ityfijth puyej HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page. serve to attract a tremendous crowd to the Salem course. Because he hasnt been to the races since February, Discovery may find himself in the role of second choice in the mile and a furlong event, especially as he failed to win in his two previous efforts over the course. Roman Soldier now has been to the post four times this year and has yet to taste defeat. H. D. Monroe, the Rockingham handicap-per, isnt the only weight adjuster who holds Elwood Sachsenmaiers star in high esteem as John B. Campbell has the Cohort colt in the Carter Handicap under an impost of 132 pounds and equally weighted with Sa-tion, George D. Wideners good sprinter. With Roman Soldier remaining in New England, the field for Aqueducts historic seven furlongs sprint will be headed by Sation, which stepped six furlongs in l:124s at Belmont Saturday in a very satisfactory trial. King Saxon will be unable to run again for quite some time because of his foot injury and Sations principal opponent probably will be Good Gamble, which captured the Queens County Handicap in fast time Monday. The Vanderbilt filly had 112 pounds on her back in Aqueducts opening feature and she is assigned 117 for Saturdays race. Two-year-olds were given numerous opportunities Saturday to add to their earnings. Latonias program was headed by the Clipsetta Stakes, which long has been a prominent feature of the Milldale course, and it saw a continuance of the reign of Dixiana youngsters as the speedy Planetoid went down to defeat before Foolish Moment. Planetoid has done quite a bit of train riding in her young career and it may have the best of her at the present time. At Chicago the principal attraction was the Hawthorne Juvenile Handicap which went to Dogaway, one of the numerous capable youngsters in the Milky Way Farms Stable of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars. Challite. daughter of Challenger U. and Design in the Tranquillity Farm Stable which won at the first asking at Hawthorne recently, made her trip to Detroit worthwhile by running away with the St. Clair Stakes in which she equalled the track record of :59 for five furlongs. Of course the most prominent of all two-year-olds decided Saturday was the National Stallion Stakes, which saw Pompoon continuing in the undefeated class.
