Day of Thrilling Sport Enjoyed by Latonia Patrons "Daily Double" Pays Big Returns to Lucky Holders Winning Combination of Riff and Head to Head Pays ,244.60 for Each . LATONIA, Ky., June 25 Successful long shots and several thrilling finishes furnished considerable entertainment for the good-sized week-day attendance at the Latonia Jockey Club course this afternoon. Riff and Head to Head, which comprised the winning "Daily Double" combination, returned the largest amount of the current meeting; two ticket-holders receiving ,244.60 each. The eight-race program was one of the best-balanced of the week, with the Newcastle Purse, over a distance of one mile and seventy yards, headlining the card, bringing together six of the better grade performers. The Rosedale Stable made a double for the day when Silk Mask showed the way from start to finish of the feature attraction to take the measure of R. L. Bakers Yantis by the comfortable margin of two lengths. Watersplash finished third, with Tearout, Silas and King Carl completing the field and finishing in the named order. Silk Mask was installed a strong favorite over his rivals, and the four-year-old gelding proved to be the first successful choice of the day. Incidentally apprentice Tommy Dickinson made it a double score for the afternoon also as he was astride both Rose-dale winners, which were saddled by trainer George C. White. Rushed into the lead at the start, Dickinson permitted Silk Mask to establish the pace while slightly restrained, and when Yantis made a bid to overtake the leader, Silk Mask had something with which to ward off the challenge. Coming away from Yantis as the latter swung wide into the stretch, Silk Mask steadily increased his margin, which was a clear two lengths at the finish. J. W. Parrishs Entree, an outsider in the betting, came from behind with a rush to account for first honors in the opening number of the day. a six furlongs sprint which brought together a capacity field. Flighlette finished second and Sunshine Boy third. There was considerable delay at the post, largely due to the antics of Deerwood, but they were dispatched in good order, with Sunshine Boy and Assist engaging in a head-and-head duel for the right to set the pace. Entree came around the outside of the field after straightening out in the stretch, getting up in time to win by a neck. Again an outsider stepped down in front in the second race, when Riff got up in the Continued on thirtv-eighth page. Working his way up on the outside, Riff clipped between Delma Dunn and Golden Mission within the final sixteenth of the six furlongs sprint and headed the pair. Golden Mission had set the pace most of the way, with Veronica C. in second place. The latter, however, tired badly after turning for home and faded out of the picture. The third consecutive long shot upset the calculations in the five and one-half furlongs sprint which was third on the card as T. D. Calhouns Head to Head got the decision over Gabriel and Old State in a driving finish. Gabriel was rushed into the lead soon after the start and succeeded in showing the way to his rivals until reaching the final sixteenth, where Head to Head forged to the front and held a half length advantage at the conclusion of the dash. The winner paid 75.80 for straight. Coming from behind with a good burst of speed in the last quarter, Cohort Lass captured the fourth event, a six furlongs affair attracting twelve starters. On the Go finished second, with Sweet Tody next at the finish. Jerdan displayed his usual burst of early speed and dominated the race with On the Go in second place. Cohort Lass came past her opponents when straightened out in the stretch and courageously went about her task of whittling away the advantage of the leaders. Though not a pronounced outsider, Cohort Lass paid 9 for straight and brought about the defeat of the fourth "straight choice. The Rosedale Stable provided the winner of the fifth race when Exclaim came down an easy winner. The race, titled the Sligo Purse, was a five and a half furlongs affair, in which eight two-year-old fillies competed. Toneys Girl finished second, three lengths behind the winner, while Perlette accounted for the show portion of the purse. Exclaim and Wise Beauty engaged in a nip-and-tuck duel for three furlongs of the dash, but after straightening out in the stretch the bay filly took a commanding lead quickly and had something in reserve when the wire was passed.
