WHERE AWAY . VINDICATES STRONG : PUBLIC SUPPORT . TAKES CICERO FEATURE Pelleteri Colorbearer Popular Winner at Old Hawthorne. 1 Makes Fast Time Over Six and a Half Furlongs in Elmwood Park Purse Infidox Second. Where Away, possibly one of the most improved horses of the current Chicago season, scored the most popular victory of his career when, as an even money chance in the betting, he carried Anthony Pelle-teris colors to the finish at the head of a small but fast band in the Elmwood Park Purse at Hawthorne Thursday. The race, a sprint over six and one-half furlongs, featured the card, and of those opposing the New Orleans-owned victor, D. L. Ogles Infidox, and Brown Feathers, owned by Mrs. E. Denemark, finished second and third, respectively. It was one of the fastest-run races of the meeting, the four-year-old Pelleteri gelding negotiating the distance on a fast track in 1:18. Carrying 115 pounds, Where Away was ridden by the able Charles Corbett, whose judgment and daring did much to bring the Stimulus gelding through a decisive winner. To hold the early lead Old Gold Stables Transmutable had to run the opening quarter mile in :224i and then was only a half length before Infidox, with Recovery and Greenspring Lad close up racing into the turn where Corbett rushed the winner between Recovery and Greenspring Lad. Adding another quarter in :46, Transmutable clung to the short advantage over Infidox, but in the final drive bowed to the Ogle three-year-old before Where Away, which bounded through next to the rail, plunged past the two of them. Once in front, Where Away quickly clinched the victory and at the finish led Infidox by two and one-half lengths. Tiring badly Transmutable was succeeded by Brown Feathers in third place within a stride or two of the finish. THREE OUT OF FOUR. It was Where Aways third winning performance in four appearances during the meeting and one of the larger week-day crowds of the season gave him and his rider a generous round of applause for vindicating their confidence in the combination. Mrs. P. A. B. Widener, daughter-in-law of Joseph E. Widener, head of the Westchester Racing Association and an internationally famous turf figure, furnished the winner and third horse in the six furlongs race of older maidens that opened the card. They were Reminiscent and Plea, the former winning by a length over E. R. Bradleys Bubblette as Plea finished the distance three lengths away from the runner-up. Five others, of which Margaret G. finished fourth, completed the field and the successful entry ruled a slight choice over the Bradley filly. It required only a few strides for the winner to take the lead on his company and he was never seriously threatened, though L. Balaski did elect to shake him up several times in the final eighth. Cut off soon after the start and forced wide by Plea when entering the stretch. Bubblette probably encountered enough bad luck to have prevented her giving the winner a stronger argument, possibly a beating. AUTOGRAPH GOES WIDE. With the 11 to 10 choice, Autograph, performing much like a beginner or novice, A. N. Goldbergs Hildur filly, Stairs, raced to victory by a big margin over the choice and three other two-year-olds in the second race, at five and one-half furlongs. As Stairs went to the front in the first three-sixteenths Autograph made a wide swing out of the back stretch. Again on the stretch turn she went very wide and as she did Stairs advantage increased to two lengths. Still un- . willing to maintain a straight course, Autograph zig-zagged through the final straight where the true running winner increased her lead to three lengths. Timberline finished third. Northern Sir, carrying Wm. Days colors and with J. Nolan in the saddle, was an unexpected winner over Shasta Broom. Marred by much crowding, particularly in the early stages, the race, a six furlongs affair, saw Tad and Whiskarita knock rivals right and left as they held advantages in the battle for the early lead, but Northern Sir, after slipping through on the inside on the stretch turn, put them away with dispatch and was in safe command of the situation before Shasta Broom routed Whiskarita from second place. Mr. Marvel and Black Scout suffered worst in the early crowding. Jockey M. Calvert, who rode Whiskarita. was suspended for the remainder of the meeting and the stewards will recommend that the state commission extend the suspension eight days beyond the period of the meeting. Well Heeled, Mrs. C. E. Dales seven-year-old gelding, gave the public choices their second victory in four races when he easily outsprinted a cheap band over the six furlongs in the fourth race. It marked his second victory in successive starts and running the distance in 1:14, he won by four lengths. A much keener tussle developed for second honors, Petty Taw and Scream fighting it out to such a close finish that patrons had to await the numbers to know their order. Squeeze Out finished fourth, with the second choice, Adelaide A., next in the field of ten. Paul Keester was astride the winner. Bert Reid, T. C. Wordens four-year-old which suffered a hemorrhage in his last race here almost two weeks ago, escaped a reoccurrence while racing with five others from the better grades in the fifth race and took the three-quarters affair in a pretty finish with Candescent. Tracker, which shared favoritism with the winner and weakened after forcing the victors pace to the final eighth, finished third. Tiring near the end, Bert Reid had all he could do to remain in front of the more determined Candescent, which missed victory by a short head. Flatly refusing to extend . herself, Kieva trailed throughout. ;
