ST. BERNARDS FINAL TRIAL Shaffer Star Gallops Mile and an Eighth in Preparation for Illinois Owners Handicap. CICERO, 111., June 25. St. Bernard, owned by E. Dale Shaffer of Chicago and no stranger to Hawthorne patrons, for he won the Hawthorne Handicap at the local track last year, had his final important trial for Saturdays -renewal of the ,000 added Illinois Owners Handicap, when trainer A. B. Gordon sent him an easy nine furlongs on, the Hawthorne oval this morning. Working under fine conditions, the Shaffer four-year-old ran the distance, the exact course over which Saturdays race will be decided, in 1:56. He was hard held throughout and traveled the first mile in 1:43. J. E. Hughes Silent Shot, also "prepping" for Saturdays race, turned a mile in 1:42, handily, shortly after St. Bernard had completed his training Thursday. Silent Shot is trained by Frank Garrett. The training of Mrs. Emil Denemarks Corinto and Chasar, also included among the stronger candidates, was concluded with fast moves over a mile yesterday, Corinto going in 1:40, handily, while Chasar was under pressure to negotiate the distance in 1:40. While St. Bernard, also winner last year of the Kenner Stakes at Saratoga, is expected to rule a pronounced favorite to take Saturdays stake for his first important victory of the current season, the Shaffer horse may find Corinto, Chasar, Silent Shot and others going after the final day feature, capable of giving him a tough battle, if not a trouncing. Others still listed as probable starters are Forever Yours, Spanish Babe, Gyral and Prince Torch. St. Bernard and Corinto will carry top weight of 118 pounds. Chasars impost will move the beam at 115 pounds, while the fillies, Spanish Babe and Forever Yours, are asked to take up 113 and 112 pounds, respectively. Imposts for the others are: Silent Shot, 110; Prince Torch, 102, and Gyral, 101.
