EL PORTAL, away well, worked his way forward steadily, wore GAUL down in the drive and won drawing away. GAUL, in motion at the start, sprinted into a long lead during the opening three-sixteenths, gave way in the drive, but held SASHEMUS safe. The latter, probably best and unprepared when the start came, moved up fast when in stride, but tired in the last strides. OLD FONDO quit. STAYNER LAD and TERRACOTTA were outrun.
