FUMBLE JASY WINNER Takes Best Offering of Thursdays Program at River Downs. Crowd Above Expectations Despite Adverse Weather and Difficult Racing Strip. CINCINNATI, Ohio, Oct. 8. Fumble, which the Detroit-owned McCarthy Stable acquired through the claiming route last spring, chalked up his first victory for that establishment when he was an easy winner of the fourth race, a six furlongs sprint for plater juveniles that was the best of todays offering over a heavy track, under cloudy skies, and before a good crowd at River Downs this afternoon. The son of Blind Play, which had the services of Porter Roberts, reached the end of the race seven lengths before M. Brans-fields Pertladdie, with third going to Baste. Job Printer, slight favorite over Baste and the winner, was fourth, with Queen Irene, Sun Jug, Mere Blaze, Sandvato and Honduras chasing the leaders to the finish. Despite the unfavorable weather conditions and the adverse racing strip, which prevented a feature from being carded, the crowd was far above expectations. Favorites were prominent in most instances and few victors came from unexpected quarters. INCREASES ADVANTAGE. Roberts rushed the winner to the front on the inside with Queen Irene, Sandvato and Pertladdie racing in close order well before the others. Leaving the far turn, Fumble began to increase his advantage and Pertladdie moved into second place. Queen Irene was the best of the others, but after reaching the stretch tired and Baste and Job Printer came on to beat her for third and fourth honors. The others were never factors. Byrdine won his second race of the meeting and furnished a mild surprise in annexing the fifth at one mile and forty yards. Paul T., which came in for the greatest support, was second and Sporting Maudie third. Robert Cheatham had the winner in front when the start came and after shaking off Conastanto and Nessus, he drew away steadily to be five lengths before Paul T. at the close. Sporting Maudie held on well for third honors, while Oddesa Clark was forced to lose ground at the stretch bend. GARNERS GOOD RIDE. Showing a preference for the heavy going and well ridden by Willie Garner, Cossack Girl, from the locally-owned stable of R. L. Swope, was an easy winner of the opening dash for maiden two-year-old fillies. The lightly-regarded Gustavia raced to second place, some six lengths back of the winner and a length before Derby Dusk, which enjoyed favoritism. Peter Pumpkin, from the stable of H. H. Temple, Jr., and Leslie Pichon proved a popular winning combination in the second race, for lowly platers at six furlongs. Jerdan was second, two and a half lengths back of the winner and a head before Briny Deep, which enjoyed the same margin over the tiring Assist Far back, while Slant Eye and Assist dominated the pace, Peter Pumpkin drove down on the outside to subdue Assist in the last furlong and win with much to spare. Briny Deep also came from far back, Continued on thiry-tourth page. FUMBLE EASY WINNER Continued from first page. but was no match for the winner and only beat Assist in the final stride. The first driving finish and another popular score came with the third race for lowly platers and also at six furlongs when Mat Jordans Mystic Sign got up to head the tiring Tarpon. Rolanda was third. Tarpon sprinted into a long lead during the opening quarter but after holding a commanding advantage to the last furlong he weakened fast and the winner, which was always in closest pursuit, came on to gain the decision. Silver Tidings, third choice to the winner and Tarpon, was allowed to drop out of contention soon after the start and was always far ,back.
