Here and There on the Turf Pompoon Points for New England Futurity Must Carry Scale Weight Billionaire May Eun in Johnson Shows Good Trial at Laurel In a change of plans, Jerome H. Louch-heim has decided that Pompoon shall fill another engagement before going into win-1 ter retirement, and October 28 should find him in the starting field of the New England Futurity, which this year takes its place among the valuable and important contests for two-year-olds. Immediately after the good son of Pompey Oonagh had established himself as the juvenile champion by winning the Belmont Futurity, it was made known that he would race no more this season, but after the excitement naturally accompanying such a victory had died away, the Philadelphia sportsman and his trainer. C. F. Clarke, took stock of the situation and de- cided that Pompoon should not be denied such a fine opportunity as the New England Futurity to increase his earnings mightily. That undoubtedly will be Pompoons final effort of the year, as he is not among the Pimlico Futurity cligiblcs. Conditions for the Narragansett Park attraction provide that Pompoon shall take up scale weight of 122 pounds, and make allowances to his opponents. Non-winners of 0,000 once, or of ,500 twice, will be allowed three pounds; of 5,000 once, or of ,000 twice, five pounds; of ,500 once, or of ,500 twice, eight pounds, and maidens will have thirteen pounds off. With the distance of a mile and seventy yards suitable to his long striding, the rangy son of Pompey should be well able, on what he has shown under fire, to give his opponents the sort of battle they might expect, Pompoon is now located at Laurel, where he will remain until about a week before being shipped to the Pawtucket course, and it will not be surprising if trainer Clarke decided to give him a race at that point, probably one at a mile, to give the colt experience in competing around two turns. Enough good youngsters eligible for the New England Futurity are still in training to make the field quite imposing. Billionaire apparently is continuing m action, judging by the Laurel workout tab, and he very likely will be under colors in the Richard Johnson Stakes Saturday. If he comes out of that engagement in good shape the brother of Brokers Tip may be pointed for the Narragansett event rather than the Spalding Lowe Jenkins Handicap, which is to be decided at Laurel three days later. The latter affair has ,500 added, in contrast to the rich purse at Narragansett. Orientalist, which Mrs Emil Denemark claimed this spring, is another eligible to the New England Futur-itv and his chances are to be respected, considering that he was second in the Arlington Futurity and Eastern Shore Handicap. i iCoritiMid- dn cighth paand i , j j j i j ; j j j I . 1 " j f ! Marshall Fields Sir Damion, -whose effort in the Belmont Futurity was far more Impressive than that of his stablemate, Charing Cross, also is intended for the race, as is Milky Way Farms Reaping Reward, winner of the United States Hotel Stakes. Falaise Stables improving Vamoose Is another possibility, while other candidates are sure ta develop during the next couple of weeks. With Billionaire shaping up as a starter in the Richard Johnson Stakes Saturday, that dash of six furlongs is gaining greater attention. The effort of the E. R. Bradley colt in the Belmont Futurity is to be discounted, but figuring that the son of Black Toney will run back to his best Saratoga form, he may give War Admiral something of an argument. No two-year-old ran as fast over the six furlongs course at the Spa than did Billionaire, and the Glen Riddle colt has the fastest run Eastern Shore to his credit. They are due to clash with a difference of four pounds in their imposts, as the Man o War youngster has been placed at the top of the weights with 121 pounds, with Billionaire two pounds under the scale. The lat-ters workout Wednesday found him stepping three-quarters in 1:13, which is creditable enough at Laurel. Other possibilities for the race and their weights are Bottle Cap, 119; Orientalist, 116; Fairy Hill, 118; No Sir, 117; Rex Flag, 113, and Burning Star, 108. No Sir is the colt that gave Pompoon his lone defeat, running five and one-half furlongs in 1:05 under 116 pounds to lead home the champion, which had up 130 pounds. That was the fastest race at the distance during the Saratoga meeting. V li
