UP AND UP RETURNS TO FORM I Finishes Length in Front in Nassau I Claiming Handicap. 3. Rosens Excellent Rated Ride Important Factor in Triumph Furfibers Late Challenge Frustrated. J SALEM, N. H., Oct. 8. Mrs. E. I. Wades Up and Up, a prime favorite with New Eng- c land racegoers, returned to his good form ,. today as he won the mile Nassau Claiming j Handicap, which featured an Indian sum- t mers day of racing at Rockingham, this . afternoon. Under an excellent rated ride " from Joe Rosen, the game son of Upset, well placed the entire distance, took the lead j when Vote Boy tired at the head of the j stretch and successfully stood off a strong s challenge from Mrs. W. R. Flemmings Fur- J fiber, the favorite, in the final straightaway to beat the latter a length. Furfiber was the same margin in advance of T. F. Swords j tiring pacemaker. Vote Boy, at the end of the journey. The latter had no opposition , for the show, finishing well in advance of . Fickle Chance. Boy Valet, the only other starter, trailed all the way. J Vote Eoy went out to make the pace and drew to a length lead as they rounded the first turn. But it was obvious even at this early stage that Up and Up was back in his old form and that he was so close up that any horse would have a hard time, in whip- ping him. Furfiber failed to show his usual ; early dash and went down the back stretch in third place. , On the turn, Rosen moved with the winner and took the lead readily. There Stevenson : also went to work on Furfiber and the choice charged to second place on the outside as they went by the eighth pole. But in the final sixteenth. Up and Up was still running freely and still holding tenaciously to his lead. Furfiber was driving hard, and Rosen had only to ride his mount out sharply to earn the decision. NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Furfiber did not turn in hii usual fron-running race but he did his best and simply was not good enough to beat Up and Up. Vote Boy was tiring at th.e end but went well. The others were never factors. They finished out in 1:38, good time over this deep course. The warm weather attracted an excellent week-day crowd and it was a throng that sent a satisfactory amount through the "tote." Arthur Hullcoats War Chase drove up fast in the stretch to catch the paeemaking Tempting Witch, from the S. Rolfe stable, and drew off from that faltering filly at the end. War Chase, wearing blinkers today, turned in a much improved race to win by three lengths. Charlie Stevenson rode the winner. Tempting Witch lasted just long enough to beat Mrs. W. Palmer Jones Ernie Manzer .half a length for the place. She had set all the early pace in the six furlongs event and enjoyed such a commanding lead as they rounded the turn that she appeared an easy winner. However, she began to shorten her stride as they straightened out and Stevenson, who had rated War Chase second, called on his mount, meeting a Teady response. War Chase passed the pacemaker in the final sixteenth and drew out after that. Behind Me was fourth in the field of twelve older maidens. LEE GOLD FIRST. R. W. Collins Lee Gold, ridden "by Stonewall Jackson, drove to victory by half a length over Bill Gallaghqrs Queen Vic, the choice, in the six iurlongs second event, Jimmy Logans Miss Tad, which . set the early- pace,, wound up third in the limit field. The winner was rated back of the pace of Miss Tad until the turn. There the leader began to shorten stride and both Lee Gold and Queen Vic moved up. The latter had the lead as they entered the stretch and all down the home lane it was strictly between Queen Vic and Lee Gold. The latter proved gamer in the drive. Miss Tad held on to take the show over Two Edged. Hoosic Maid saved ground on the turn, and loomed as a menacing factor at that stage, but dropped back rapidly in the final sixteenth. In one of the closest finishes of the meeting, C. S. Madisons Parity whipped Miss Mary Whites oLttafun by a nose in the six furlongs third event, with "Sport" Haymakers Cancel just a head back of the battling pair and two lengths clear of the early pacmaker, Amqui. Stonewall Jackson rode the winner, marking a consecutive double for that rider, who is at the top of his form right now. It was the second time In two races that Jackson had earned a narrow decision over Johnny Barba, who was astride the runner-up. The winner was rated fourth for most of the journey, and got up just in time for the eyelash decision. Cancel, the favorite, was forced to take back on the rear lane and then came around horses when making her bid:
