EPSOM DOWNS TURF NOTES I and G. F. Jenkins vanned Mrs. Bert Campbells Pompous Genie to Midland, Texas, to compete in the feature race at that point on Saturday. In the absence of Jenkins, E. B. Shipp will look after the other thoroughbreds which are stabled at Epsom Downs. J. P. Toomey, assistant starter, who was knocked down and rendered unconscious by Bally Wise at the start of the seventh race Tuesday, was struck behind the right ear by the horses hoof and submitted to an X-ray examination Wednesday to ascertain whether he suffered a concussion as the result of the accident. Licenses granted to trainers, jockeys and grooms by the Texas Racing Commission were received by A. G. Davidson, representative of the body, and were distributed at the Epsom Downs course Wednesday. The storm that hit Houston early Wednesday morning cut off the electricity and water supply for several hours. However, the services were restored by an emergency crew of workmen before 9 oclock. Dan Deering, veteran trainer of the Three Ds Stock Farm, announced that he will retire My Dainty following the close of the Epsom Downs meeting, and the mare will be sent to the Waggoner Brothers thoroughbred nursery at Arlington, Texas, to be used as a brood mare. While on a visit here for the day, A. C. Francis announced that he will ship the three horses he has at Midland, Texas, to Epsom Downs either Sunday or Monday. The trio of platers are My Goal, Polly Shaw and Elligene. "Mickey" Fernandez, New Orleans turfman, is up and about after being confined to his home for more than a week due to illness. Harold O. Simmons has taken a three-year contract on Robert Roper, seventeen-year-old lad of Lufkin, Texas. The youngster weighs eighty-seven pounds and is adept in the handling of thoroughbreds. However, it will be some time before he makes his debut under colors. The stewards posted a notice on the bulletin board that permission will not be granted for the "warming up" of horses on the wav to the post in the future. Too many trainers have been taking advantage of permission granted a few in "warming up" their horses during the parade to the post, the stewards jstated. t y
